A coincidence that my wife was wearing the Portugal colors. She didnโt realize until I told her. ๐
Itโs been an amazing honeymoon and I canโt wait to be back to work for obvious reasons. ๐๐

Oh, to be disgustingly educated.โจTo have several degrees with your name on it.โจTo enter rooms and raise the standard.โจTo know your stuff and know it well.โจTo carry knowledge nobody can take from you.

Chapters 5 & 6: Comfort & Die-ease
Hafeez explores how our relationship with comfort and discomfort can shape the way we respond to everyday situations. He explains that parents can sometimes become so focused on protecting their children that they unintentionally teach them to avoid uncomfortable feelings. I found this worth thinking about because thereโs a difference between protecting a child from harm and allowing them to experience the normal difficulties that come with growing up.
The conversation about heartbreak also caught my attention. Hafeez describes how romantic relationships can gradually turn into emotional dependencies, making their endings difficult to cope with. It was interesting to follow how he connected this to our expectations, feelings of emptiness and our ability to deal with change.
In Chapter Six, he takes the discussion further by explaining that discomfort, or what he calls dis-ease, is a natural part of life. He suggests that not every uncomfortable feeling means something is wrong or needs to be fixed. Sometimes, we experience discomfort simply because weโre growing, changing or adjusting to different situations.
I particularly liked his example of comparing the emotional response to losing a loved one with the disappointment of not receiving a clothing order on time. He was exploring how people can sometimes respond to everyday disappointments with the same intensity as much bigger life events. It brought the discussion back to how our expectations influence our experiences.
I also enjoyed the different conversations especially Simonโs constant questions and occasional sarcasm and also how Lisa often helps clarify some of Hafeezโs explanations. The different reactions between these characters make the book feel less like someone simply giving a lecture.
Iโm beginning to see a clearer picture on the central idea Hafeez is trying to communicate: discomfort is not always something to run away from, and learning to live with it is part of being human.
Chapter Four: Anxiety
I liked this chapter, especially because Hafeez looks at anxiety from a different perspective.
The cliff example was my favourite part. He got Simon and Lisa to imagine standing on the edge of a crumbling cliff before explaining his point. And honestly, I didnโt see his answer coming. According to Hafeez, anxiety is jumping up and down on the edge of that cliff to see what happens next. It was such an unexpected way to explain it.
Iโve always associated anxiety with fear, worry and overthinking, so his connection between anxiety and ambition caught my attention. The idea that the same feeling we interpret as fear could also be excitement or anticipation made me look at it differently.
I also liked the explanation of how the gut and mind work together, particularly the idea that our bodies can pick up on things before weโve had time to process them properly.
Lisa brought a lot to the conversation with her knowledge of other theories, while Simon kept asking the questions I imagine many would have asked. Their back-and-forth also added some humour to what could otherwise have been a very serious discussion.
I anticipate to see how Hafeez develops this idea further and whether Iโll find myself looking at anxiety differently by the end of the book.
