SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

If you self-identify as a "celebrity nutritionist", you've just obviated all credibility.

It has so far cost me one of my oldest and dearest friends, my brother whose guardian I was, and my wonderful wife. Seriously, fuck all cancer but fuck pancreatic cancer to death.

It’s not like “having existed” doesn’t matter since time is the ultimate filter, but when your first supporting premise is “something, something <X> years” your argument is…wrong-footed.

When you don't quite recognize a song, but "you know you know it" because it's either a down-tempo acoustic mix or an up-tempo dance mix. In this instance, an acoustic version of Spin Doctors "Two Princes". Nice.

The “For you” tab is NOT for you. It is against you. It is content you didn’t choose, selected to appeal to your base instincts, to optimize engagement metrics. Follow the people you choose to follow.

Wondering why Zephyr doesn't use jettison-able hydrogen balloons to boost into the stratosphere. It would seem to simplify ascent through the troposphere by obviating lift concerns during weather turbulence.

If I were CEO of AWS, This would be my day 1 executive order: - All services will be renamed to have the AWS as the prefix, no more of this Amazon or AWS nonsense. - Freeze major UI changes, all changes must be small and incremental, not more UI theme changes, we are boxy and will stay that way. - IPv4 will remain free until we can make IPv6 not suck - Every team has to review their AWS CLI reference docs and make sure they have a large surplus of examples, no products go out without example code. - No product goes out without an easily replicable demo files so customers can easily experience the value add. - Freeze any colour changes to AWS Icons or AWS Certification badge changes. - Features will not be branded as services so people can just climbing the greed ladder. Darkmode is not a service. Sorry no promotion for you Don. - No more platform or convience services. CodeCataylst, CodeStar, Amplify, OpsWorks, AppRunner, you have to clean out by the end of the week - No more underbaking services on their first launch. The thing needs to work well or lets not ship it at all because they never get better and worse we get stuck Anything else I missed? LOL

As a kid, the magic of software was that I could sit down and make something with no license, degree, or ~money. Gotta say, publishing an iOS app from scratch today is a verrry diff vibe. I wonder how many young people's ideas we've lost at "and now register for a DUNs number."

Merely consuming JSON and emitting JSON is (even with schema validation) NOT a proper API. Please only do this for low duty-cycle “bridging” interfaces.
