boxd in 60 seconds
a whole linux machine that boots in under 10ms
composable: set it up once with your tools and data, then spin up as many as you need
fork it mid run, let it hibernate, wake it on traffic, share it with your team
one line to install: curl -fsSL boxd.sh/downloads/install.sh | sh
Self-host boxd for free!
We believe in a world where nobody has to rebuild their infrastructure from scratch. Therefore, builders can now run boxd up to 16 vCPU for free.
Opening up our binary is the first step towards our goals. Expect more open source progress from boxd as we work towards our mission of commoditising the environment.
Deploy boxd now:
- Single config file
- Easy 30-60 minute install
- Native GCP and AWS Installers
- Compatible on any KVM compatible host
- Free up to 16 cores
Go to boxd.sh/self-hosting to get your cluster.
RL works. The problem is leaky environments.
If a rollout can see the last one's files or look the answer up online, the model learns to cheat. AgentEnv from @ScaleAILabs now gives each environment and agent its own boxd VM. It boots in 2 seconds and is deleted afterwards.
Each rollout gets fresh VMs, so nothing carries over. You decide from outside the VM what it can reach online, which covers Docker and every container in it. You can also start every VM from the same snapshot. In one environment that cut setup from about 117 to 47 seconds.
To try it, pip install 'agentenv-framework[boxd]' and follow the setup in our docs:

You are caching CI the wrong way
Hear our CTO, Laur, explain at AGNTCon how we cut our Rust CI from 30 minutes to under 3. We stopped caching pieces and cache the whole machine:
- Build main every few hours and save the machine as a snapshot
- Every branch starts a fresh machine from that snapshot
- Every dependency is already compiled, so only the change builds
We are median 3-6x faster than Github-hosted jobs, benchmarked on 10 open source projects.

Introducing egress control on boxd
Your agents can use API keys and never see the real value. Save a key, pick the sites it's for, and the machine gets a replacement. We add the real key anywhere in the request and hide it in the response.
Egress is free for now.

boxd on mobile is live!
Open any machine from your phone in the SSH app you already have. One tap creates the password: nothing to install, no key to carry around. Termius, Moshi, a-Shell and WebSSH on iOS, Termius and ConnectBot on Android.

Launching Compute Runner: compute-runner.boxd.sh
A lot of packages got hit this week so we made an awareness game about it through @boxd_sh . Play as your favourite compute provider and dodge shai-hulud on the way
Win up to $1000 in boxd credits!
Introducing @netbird on boxd
Many users asked for this integration. You can now serve your whole organization over your company’s NetBird network, with the same hostnames and TLS, reachable only from inside it.

Introducing Herdr on boxd
@herdrdev keeps all your coding agents in one terminal. Now each one can run on its own boxd machine, right in herdr's sidebar. Close your laptop and they keep working. Open herdr again and every workspace is where you left it.
Get started below:

Introducing CI runners on boxd
On boxd, the whole machine is used as cache. Every push and PR starts from a snapshot of main's last green run, with the repo, dependencies, build caches and Docker layers already in place.
A lot of you asked for it. Guide below:

Looking very much forward! 🤙🏻
Heading to SF next week to host a dinner discussion with @boxd_sh & some of our smartest friends on the future of software development, deployment, and management.
It's by invitation but we have a couple of spots open for people passionate and building in this space!

omnara now runs on boxd
@omnaraai is the open-source alternative to claude managed agents, and boxd is now one of its machine pools. every agent gets its own linux machine that sleeps between turns, then wakes on the next message with its memory and processes where it left them.
