WTF HAPPENED IN TURKEY AND WHY EVERY BRAZILIAN SHOULD KNOW THIS 🇹🇷🇧🇷
In 2010, $1 bought 1.50 Turkish lira.
Today it buys 48.
The lira lost over 95% of its value in 16 years. No war. No default. No hyperinflation.
Just a government that decided to cut interest rates by force 🧵
Brazil's defenses, and their limits.
🇧🇷 Floating FX and inflation targeting since 1999
🇧🇷 Central bank autonomy in law since 2021, with fixed board mandates that don't coincide with the president's
🇧🇷 Reserves above the government's external debt
🇧🇷 Public debt overwhelmingly in reais
The honest caveat: the real also weakened, from R$1.75 in 2010 to ~R$5.10 today. But the real lost ~3x. The lira lost 30x+.
And Turkey had independence on paper too. Laws can be changed.
Brazil's Copom decides its next move tomorrow.
🇹🇷 Policy rate: 37%
🇧🇷 Selic: 13.75%
The higher number is the worse deal. A rate is only worth what the institution behind it is worth.
Brazil pays ~9.5% in real terms, set by a central bank that can say no to the president. That's the sovereign yield sBRD brings onchain.

1/ Yesterday, Oct 30, was the deadline for existing virtual-asset operators in Brazil to apply for VASP authorization under Res. BCB 519-521.
We didn't file.
We didn’t give up on Brazil, rather, the product we're launching isn't one of the things this framework regulates.
5/ How to deposit: brd.digital and and soon to be announced partners.
Disclaimer: 6-7% APY isn’t fixed, following variable Brazilian rates, hedge costs and long-term targets.

Stop the count!!
Brazil's Treasury cancelled this week's fixed-rate and inflation-linked auctions after long DI rates jumped up to 182bps in a day.
It kept one: LFT, the Selic-linked bond.
The floating leg was the only auction left standing.
LFT pays the Selic: 13.75%. Inflation is 4.57%. A real rate near 8.8%, anchored to the overnight rate, not to an auction.
BRD reserves sit in LFT-linked instruments.
The caveat: the Selic is in a cutting cycle, and floating yield follows it down.
