Awful news about Helen Haines — a principled politician and a thoroughly decent human being. Wishing the best for her.

Fiji's Deputy PM Biman Prasad says Fiji's proposal for an "Ocean of Peace" (which is expected to be endorsed by Pacific leaders in Honiara next month) could include a call to end "militarisation" of supply chains and "securitisation" of development assistance

One snippet ahead of Albanese unveiling his new Ministry: I’m told Pat Conroy will remain Minister for Defence Industry and the Pacific, but the PM, Wong and Conroy have decided International Development will be peeled off and handed to someone else (not sure who)

A privilege to exchange notes with @UNDP Administrator on our respective work. Building better and more ethical development intelligence systems has never felt more business critical. @devintellab
Great to meet with Bridi Rice @bridirice, CEO of Development Intelligence Lab. Excellent discussion on how development intelligence can enable more systemic, dynamic, forward-looking sustainable development; how we can go further #ForPeopleForPlanet.

Superb to see 40+ regional leaders, analysts, government officials and development organisations in conversation with the Minister today to mark the 1 year anniversary of the International Development Policy. An announcement close to my heart too.... $35m new civil society fund!
Working closely with regional partners we have made good progress rebuilding Australia’s aid program since our new development policy was launched in August 2023. Today we’re also announcing $35 million for a new civil society platform to support a free and open Indo-Pacific.

On pre-electioneering: Coalition and Dutton specifically undermining Australian relationships in the Pacific due to climate change position and having previously “vacated the field.”

On future focus: implementation, implementation, implementation. Climate and gender targets a priority, along with ensuring infrastructure investments deliver a “double dividend” to the Pacific. Watch for the COP.
