the quiet part is all these aml filters and checks are pushed by cexes. i have no other explanation after several of my pristine addresses got flagged as risky when off-ramping. none of them ever touched anything but airdrops, dexes or defi lending protocols. the rules are completely arbitrary and for sure they discriminate against self custody, even if it’s fully transparent.
This is a solid demonstration of Railgun's privacy pools mechanism ( papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.… ) working in practice, allowing Railgun to avoid serving proceeds of crime without using any snooping / backdoors.
How it works:
* Anyone can deposit into Railgun.
* After you deposit, there is a 1 hour period during which various algorithms detect whether or not the deposit likely came from what the algorithms consider to be criminal activity.
* If your deposit passes the filter, then after 1 hour you can use ZKPs to withdraw privately (but ideally wait longer to get a good-enough anonymity set).
* If your deposit fails the filter, then you can only withdraw back to your own address. There is no risk that your funds will get frozen/seized, you just can't benefit from the privacy pool.
If you disagree with Railgun's filters, anyone is free to fork and make their own pool with their own rules, though if you can't get reasonably wide public support you're going to have a tiny anonymity set.

L2s can achieve a major UX improvement overnight simply by renaming "bridging" to Depositing.
Depositing is such a familiar and routine thing for ppl.
You deposit money to the bank. You deposit to Robinhood. You deposit to Coinbase. You deposit to Phantom. You deposit to TG bot #69. You deposit into an app. You deposit into a protocol.
You deposit to Base. You deposit to Arbitrum. You deposit to Polygon. You deposit to your favourite L2.
Those things are all effectively the same action.
"Bridging" is not as familiar. It's indicative of travel which feels time consuming and costly. It communicates a physical barrier to the user, a rift of some kind.
Nominative determinism is a thing.
We can can begin improving user experience right now, without any functionality changes, by using better naming conventions.

Building something is pretty wild because originally there was nothing, just an idea, that lots of ppl said was a stupid idea.
And to make your idea reality will take so long, lots of people, lots of time, lots of money.
So you make a smaller, weirder, shittier version that you can do more quickly, with less risk, and less cost, and use this shittier version to help figure out if your idea was a stupid idea or not.
If people are willing to use (or even enjoy) the quick/shit version, then maybe it’s worth spending time and money making it better.
Then critics will say “well people may like it, but look at these ten problems with it, it will never work”.
And you must focus on where you are going while these people criticise where you are.
