Sam Altman hasn't written a line of code in about a year. He doesn't expect to again, except as a hobby, his words: "like a Revolutionary War reenactment."
Yet he says coders have never been busier.
A few years ago the confident prediction was no more jobs for coders. Instead the job moved up a level: less typing, more directing agents, and demand for software turned out to be far bigger than anyone modeled.
Altman's bigger point: AI doesn't free up time so much as it raises the bar on output. His video editor adopted an AI tool, stopped touching the timeline, and ended up busier, making more videos.
Asked how many GPUs he wants working for him, he said: "Infinite. As many as I can get my hands on."
That's an admission that capability creates appetite. More compute, more assistants, more scope, not less work.
If your team is rolling out AI tools and expecting headcount to shrink, this is the counter-case worth planning around. The craft shifts. The scope usually grows.
Full breakdown, including his "renaissance over industrial revolution" framing, in the first comment.
Where has AI made your team faster but somehow also busier?
Watching a system that never sleeps has never been easier. ONTOS puts 100+ live instruments on one desk, each clickable. Includes a double pendulum, a Galton board, and a Deferred Decisions Gantt chart. Blame is reassignable.
