1/9: Pulled 3.1M MLB pitches, 2021-2026, to test something: if every pitcher can now see what a good slider looks like, what happens once everybody builds one? Thread on what six seasons say.

You should check this thread and realize why Kyle is so good at this.
"Why doesn't he get whiffs if he has good Stuff?" Current models can be opaque in how they get to their conclusions. To combat this, we have developed a process to illustrate how and why a player's pitches are good/bad/neutral, based on our models. (1/8)

Mel Ott is one of the biggest era-adjusted surprises. One would think that a guy who played in 1926-1947 and was perhaps never the best player in his own city would get crushed by a talent pool adjustment. That is not the case. His 102.2 era-adjusted WAR ranks 20th all-time. Interestingly, he leapfrogs several older players (Wagner, Collins, Hornsby, etc) after era adjustments are applied. eckeraadjustment.web.illinoi…
Sporting News 140 Greatest Players The Prodigies Mel Ott rewrote the National League record book in a 22-year career powered by a pure left-handed swing, hand-crafted by the gods for the Polo Grounds.

We can be wrong at times, all of us. Sometimes because of ignorance, sometimes because of stupidity. And we can also be stupid, ignorant, stubborn and conceited all at once. Like Jim.

So you don’t have a freaking idea if things are “better” or “worse” yet you can’t stop yourself from shouting whatever nonsense you think you have to, just because having knowledgeable people running the game you feel entitled to hurts your feelings? Shocking.

No idea. There would be many variables and possibilities as to why a particular team’s runs are up or down. Could be affected by injuries, player moves, strategy, execution and manifold reasons. But I don’t know.

this was just an example case of what AI models are capable of, but projects like this can go in a lot of different ways. @DrummeyDylan and @camarcano have a great open source starting spot with BaseballCV! github.com/BaseballCV/Baseba…

Using Opus 5.5 to manually annotate batter, pitcher, and catcher from broadcast footage. Opus isn't even the best for manual annotation according to @skalskip92 's benchmarking. Just goes to show how far vision has come in just a few years.

Baines NO merece estar.
tell me again why Will Clark doesn’t belong in the Hall of Fame? nothing against Harold Baines. great player and I always liked him. But look at the comparison. Clark had the higher WAR, AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS and OPS+. Baines’ advantages in hits, HR and RBI came over 854 more games and nearly 2,800 more plate appearances. and Clark didn’t hang on until he couldn’t play anymore. He walked away at 36 to be home with his family, particularly his autistic son Trey. In his final season he hit .319 with 21 HR, a .964 OPS and 145 OPS+. Will Clark belongs in the Hall of Fame conversation. #SFGiants @shegone03 @WillClark22 @sportslarryk
