New article out about Hidden Markov Models. HMMs are probabilistic models used to solve real life problems ranging from weather forecasting to #NLP tasks. They're close relatives of Markov Chains, but their hidden states make them a uniquely powerful tool. medium.com/p/2df2a7956d65

We often fixate on the visible and exciting, overlooking that most success comes from consistently doing the mundane, unglamorous work that few notice. The 98/2 Rule: people spend 98% of their time talking about flashy things that contribute only 2% to the results, while overlooking the fact that 98% of the results come from consistently doing the boring basics that few notice. Ask yourself: Does the attention you give to something truly reflect its importance?

It's beneficial to stop eating at least three hours before bedtime. This timing aligns with the onset of natural melatonin production, which can inhibit insulin release from the pancreas. Eating too close to bedtime might prevent insulin from effectively regulating blood glucose levels during sleep, potentially leading to elevated blood sugar levels. Genetic research supports the idea that sensitivity to melatonin affects diabetes risk. Specifically, individuals with a genetic variation in the melatonin receptor gene, which enhances melatonin's effect on the pancreas, face a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those without this variation. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1937…
Melatonin starts spiking ~3 hours before bed, which blunts insulin production in the pancreas So when you eat a meal close to bedtime, less insulin is produced The end result? Elevated blood glucose A general guideline: Stop eating ~3 hours before bed

Welcome Somos Flight! 🚀 Diana Trujillo took the shift for the first-time last week as NASA’s 108th Flight Director making the 2022 Flight Director class complete. Her team name “Somos Flight” references a community. Somos, meaning “we are”, represents who we are as people, what we value, what we have gone through to become, and what we can do together. Congratulations Diana!

Prepare for splashdown. The @NASAArtemis II crew and the recovery forces of the @USNavy did their survival and egress training at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) in Houston, Texas to prepare for their future splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Both the crew and the recovery team practiced the choreography required to safely retrieve the crew after the Orion capsule returns to Earth.

ML friends: how do you deal with awkward busywaiting during iterative development and exploratory analysis? Like, when evaluating a notebook cell takes 1-5m—too long to feel good about just waiting, but not long enough to properly context switch?

"This kind of short-term memory is one of the key characteristics of HMMs and it’s called the Markov Assumption, indicating that the probability of reaching the next state is only dependent on the probability of the current state" medium.com/p/2df2a7956d65

"#HMMs are statistical models that work as a sequence of labeling problems. These types of problems describe the evolution of observable events, which themselves, are dependent on internal factors that can’t be directly observed - they are hidden. medium.com/p/2df2a7956d65

The greatest trap is telling yourself that you’ll do something important tomorrow. Procrastination creates negative momentum. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to start. Telling yourself you'll do it tomorrow is how dreams die.

I recorded my vocals & guitar through a weightless Sennheiser mic, using GarageBand. Other instruments beautifully added back on Earth by @emmgryner & @extrakilometre. Video edited by @Evan_Hadfield & @Tidby.
Ten years ago, Chris Hadfield (@Cmdr_Hadfield) recorded this marvel which remains one of the masterpieces of music and astronautics. Entirely shot on International Space Station, he released it the day before he returned to Earth at the end of Exp. 35.
