Sydney Owen was a Loper long before she was a college student. As a young girl, she attended the former Child Development Center on UNK’s campus and cheered on the blue and gold at athletic events. She even served as a ball girl for the basketball, volleyball and soccer teams. Her mother, Carla Kegley-Owen, is a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, and both of her parents graduated from UNK. So did her older brother and several other family members. In many ways, the campus has always felt like home. “I grew up coming to UNK, so there’s always been that family connection,” Owen said. “But there’s also a strong sense of community here. The people you meet become like family, too.” FULL STORY: unknews.unk.edu/2026/10/26/u… #PowerOfTheHerd

Growing up on a farm near Spalding Dr. Hilary Miller initially planned to become a veterinarian. That changed at UNK, where her science courses sparked an interest in human medicine and a brand new rural health program (KHOP) changed her future. Now practicing at Valley County Health System in Ord, Miller serves as medical director for emergency services across seven counties, helping train and supervise volunteer emergency medical personnel. She loves making an impact in a rural community and also likes knowing the people she treats. “I’m not only going to see you in the office, but I’m also going to see you at a basketball game, or we’re going to be sitting at a restaurant together or participating on a volunteer board together,” she said. “Rural healthcare really provides that personal layer that I don’t think I would otherwise have in an urban setting.” FULL STORY: unknews.unk.edu/2026/10/12/i… #PowerOfTheHerd

UNK will take Mantor Hall offline or student housing at the end of summer 2027, a move that will reduce operating costs, avoid significant future maintenance expenses and better align the university’s residential capacity with student demand. The 283-bed residence hall will remain open throughout the 2026-27 academic year. Mantor Hall will eventually be demolished and the site restored to green space, although a timeline has not been determined. FULL STORY: unknews.unk.edu/2026/10/22/u… #PowerOfTheHerd
