Newsflash, @sama, we're all aware that there's very little chance of you not selling or loosing the data given to you in chat, especially if those chats include valuable and privileged information. Local AI fixes that problem.
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources
โa lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre
but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time
you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment
somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of thatโ
A very interesting advert by the ANC. Very well done.
The public pays for that info, so really you should be just laying it all out for us.

The correct course of action is to use the vulnerability to hack back into TEMP-PHP-2014 and take control of it, obviously.
Security called me at 6:12 AM today.
"Patch every PHP server immediately."
I asked what happened.
"Two critical vulnerabilities. Remote code execution. No authentication required."
Cool.
How many PHP servers do we have?
According to inventory: 12
According to reality:
Nobody knows.
We found one running WordPress.
Three running old internal tools.
One under someone's desk.
Two inside vendor appliances.
A forgotten employee directory from 2016.
And a server named:
PHP-OLD-DO-NOT-TOUCH
Naturally, that one runs payroll exports.
Then we found a PHP 5.6 box.
I asked who owned it.
The documentation said:
BRIAN.
Brian left in 2019.
We called Brian.
He said:
"Oh wow, that's still running?"
Excellent.
By 8 AM, leadership joined the incident call.
CEO:
"Can hackers actually get in?"
Security:
"Potentially yes."
CEO:
"Without a password?"
Security:
"Yes."
CEO:
"Then why do WE need passwords?"
Not the lesson.
Finance asked if we could wait until the weekend to patch because downtime affects revenue.
Security explained that the alternative was letting strangers execute code on our servers.
Finance asked for a cost comparison.
At 9:17, someone suggested temporarily taking the vulnerable websites offline.
Marketing refused.
"Our campaign is live."
So for the next hour, the company officially decided maintaining a landing page for 20% off webinar registration was more important than preventing remote server takeover.
We finally patched everything we could find.
Then our scanner discovered another PHP server.
Hostname:
TEMP-PHP-2014
Uptime:
4,512 days.
Nobody knows what it does.
Nobody owns it.
Nobody can shut it down.
But every time we block network access, the warehouse stops printing shipping labels.
Security has classified it as critical infrastructure.
It is running PHP 5.4.
The vulnerability has existed longer than half our employees.
The emergency patch took four hours.
Finding out what PHP actually runs took eleven.
The internet isn't held together with code.
It's held together with servers everyone is afraid to turn off.

Eddie Jordan gave Michael Schumacher his F1 debut.
Two weeks later, heโd lost him. Over one word.
August 1991. Jordan, a brand-new team, had just lost one of its drivers to a jail sentence. Eddie needed a replacement for the Belgian Grand Prix, fast.
He took a chance on a 22-year-old German sportscar driver. He later admitted he took him because he needed the money (Mercedes paid $150,000 for the seat).
Schumacher qualified 7th on his debut, at a track heโd never driven.
The whole paddock noticed.
Eddie thought he had him secured. Heโd agreed in principle with Mercedes, who backed Schumacher, to keep him for the rest of the season.
But no contract was signed.
The letter of intent said Schumacher would sign โa contractโ, not โthe contractโ. His manager later said that one-word difference is the only reason he didnโt have to stay.
Jordan went to court and lost. There was no contract to enforce.
The fight got so messy that F1 changed its rules. From 1992, every driver contract had to be officially registered.
By then, it was too late for Eddie. Schumacher had raced for Benetton in the next Grand Prix, and went on to win 91 races and 7 world titles.
All because of the difference between โaโ and โtheโ.
Apparently @bot can help you cut off Ukraine's internet access.
