💉 WHAT WAS THE “PLACEBO”? This is one of the simplest questions I think parents should be able to ask about childhood vaccines: Before these products were added to the childhood schedule, were they compared against an inert 0.9% normal-saline injection in the pivotal pediatric safety trials? So I went looking. I reviewed vaccines across the 2016–2026 U.S. childhood and adolescent schedule — Hepatitis B, rotavirus, DTaP, Hib, pneumococcal, polio, MMR, varicella, Hepatitis A, Tdap, HPV and meningococcal vaccines. And I used a very specific definition: 🧂 TRUE SALINE CONTROL = 0.9% sodium chloride ❌ No vaccine antigen ❌ No aluminum or other immune-stimulating adjuvant ❌ No different vaccine ❌ No earlier vaccine formulation ❌ No other active comparator Why does that distinction matter? Because comparing a vaccine with another vaccine or another biologically active preparation answers a different question than comparing it with an inert injection. If both groups experience similar adverse events, an active-comparator trial can tell us whether the NEW product performs differently from the comparator. But it cannot, by itself, tell us what the background rate would have been after saline alone. That distinction is important. 🔎 And when we audited the pivotal pediatric evidence, genuine 0.9% normal-saline controls were remarkably uncommon. Many trials instead used another vaccine, an earlier formulation, an adjuvant-containing preparation or another non-saline comparator. I'm not asking anyone to take my word for it. Look at what the control groups actually received. When you hear: 📢 “Randomized, placebo-controlled trial” ask one more question: 👉 What exactly was in the placebo? Parents deserve to know not only what was injected into the vaccine group — but what was injected into the group being used to establish the comparison. Read the studies. Read the package inserts. Read the control-group descriptions. Then decide whether the evidence answers the question you thought it answered. 🎩Carlie Marie ✨
