CBS missed the real news here: progressive DA Pamela Price let the perpetrator walk free (with 1 day in jail and just $7k fine). And I am among the voters who successfully recalled this pos.

A Berkeley chemical engineer who suffered years of unexplained illness discovered through a spy camera from Amazon that her coworker, David Xu, was poisoning her food and water with cadmium, a toxic heavy metal for nearly 18 months between 2017 and 2019. The victim experienced significant health problems and at times required emergency care at a hospital. Newly released video shows Xu appearing to put a substance in her water bottle in 2019. Xu was arrested that year and charged with attempted murder and two counts of poisoning, offenses that could have sent him to prison for life. But under a plea deal, the attempted murder charge and one poisoning count were dropped. Xu pleaded no contest to one felony poisoning charge and received two years of probation, with credit for one day served. He completed probation in March and is now seeking to have his felony conviction dismissed.

My uncle noticed his monthly water and sewage bill jumped from $85 to $290 over the last six months, even though his family didn't fill a single pool or leak a gallon. He called the municipal water board to report what he assumed was a meter error. The clerk explained that the city sold the local water treatment facility and underground main grid to an infrastructure equity fund last year to cover municipal budget deficits. When my uncle asked why that tripled his rate, she told him: "The private operator added a quarterly 'grid modernization surcharge' and an 'infrastructure maintenance access fee' to every residential account." Nothing about the pipes, pressure, or water quality improved. Private equity isn't just buying houses and daycares anymore. They are acquiring local utility monopolies so they can bill working families a mandatory tax on drinking water and flushing the toilet.

I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it.

Entering today, the New York Giants were 0-230 since 1970 when trailing by 14+ points in the final 8 minutes of regulation. They're now 0-230-1.

The Atlanta Dream's home games for the WNBA Finals did not have a set location as of Sunday night. The capacity at State Farm Arena is 17,044, but it's booked with a Sombr concert on Oct. 22 and Atlanta Hawks regular-season games on Oct. 24 and 29: spr.ly/6018BH8Gjj

The room where new life begins shouldn’t be where Black women die. Harris County has the nation’s highest rate of Black maternal mortality. One woman is turning her own experiences into a call for change. na2.hubs.ly/H08j_mn0

41 states charge for what is known as cell rent. And even if you parole out early states like Florida will make you pay the TOTALITY per day of your original stay. One Black woman was billed $127,000 ($50 a day for 2,555 days) for the full seven years of her sentence despite only staying 10 months
A prison charging for rent and utilities is insane

Another bad report for Kim Guilfoyle: According to an audio recording reviewed by WSJ, Guilfoyle boasted at Davos about her close ties to two Greek tycoons and said they were bankrolling her high-rolling trips around the world. She also said she was being blocked from attending a dinner for Eric Trump, and she wanted an American businessman on the guest list to get her in the door. wsj.com/politics/policy/at-d…

Trump in his rally speech tonight: "China makes the windmills, but try finding a wind farm in China. There is no such." Here's a map of wind farms in China, which has by far the most wind capacity in the world and continues to install far more than any other country:

Today I found out that in 1913, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky, Sigmund Freud, Josip Broz Tito, and Emperor Franz Joseph all lived or stayed in Vienna at the same time, just miles apart in the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Astonishing coincidence. Adolf Hitler: Struggled as an impoverished painter and postcard seller while living in men’s hostels in Vienna. Joseph Stalin: Spent a month in Vienna in January 1913 under an alias/forged passport, where he wrote Marxism and the National Question. Leon Trotsky: Lived in exile in Vienna, editing the Marxist gazette Pravda ("Justice"). Sigmund Freud: Already established as the founder of psychoanalysis, living and working on Berggasse. Josip Broz Tito: Worked as a young metalworker and factory hand before being drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army. Emperor Franz Joseph: Ruled the multi-ethnic Austro-Hungarian Empire from the Hofburg Palace in Vienna

This is one of the consequences of Washington DC not having any Congressional representatives. The administration treats it like imperial rulers would treat a colony
What happened today was a blitzkrieg on a public park. A cherished DMV space. If you are not livid about the circumstances that led up to this and what exactly the Federal government did in the past 24 hours I don’t know what to tell you. Let’s do a quick timeline: 1. Last night, a Friday before a long weekend, at 5PM, government lawyers filed a notice that tree cutting would begin in earnest today. The stated reason was a pretext - apparently fulfilling a 2019 Cultural Landscape Review on East Potomac. This was clearly an excuse to bring the gangs in. For months the government has stated there is no plan, nothing has been decided, going to follow the law. Ya, right. 2. At 5:30AM this morning, 3-4 dozen workers assembled at East Potomac Park. The blitzkrieg began shortly thereafter. They were given clear orders to fell as many trees as possible. 3. For hours, from 6AM until 4PM today, nothing but chainsaws. Healthy trees, old trees, all would come down. No clear estimate for the extent but at least 100 trees came down. The devastation is apparent. Entire groves cleared. Not a single animal on the peninsula. Not a sound aside from the roar of chainsaws. Earth ripped to pieces. Anybody that thinks it is acceptable to shred public lands to appeal to the vanity of the President of the United States needs their head examined. We have been sounding the alarm on this for months. For months we knew this day would come. Where the President would, under dubious legal pretexts, sic his goons on a beloved public space. This is not a local issue. This is fundamentally a question of if we the people own our public lands or the temporary resident of the White House does. @jamie_raskin @JaredHuffman @DonBeyerVA @glenniveymd @MarkWarner @AlsobrooksForMD @timkaine @ChrisVanHollen

This is shockingly petty and ignorant, even for this administration.

A few of the videos that were sent to us today from East Potomac. Spoke to several folks on the ground & did a late-day spin around Ohio Drive ourselves. Many of the trees cut down were not dead, dying & or invasive. Plenty of large, healthy mature oaks & maples came down.

No more cheap airlines, we are paying through the nose for flights now -- and, under Trump, all the consumer protections we had are gone. This doesn't hurt wealthy people; it only helps airlines that overbook their flights and create havoc that leads to delays.
Starting Oct 19, the Trump administration is rolling back Biden-era airline passenger protections, and airlines will no longer have to provide stranded passengers with meals, hotels, or other assistance for delays or cancellations.

This explains why Texas separatists, with their totally coincidentally identical “Veteran, Christian, Father, MAGA” bios, have suddenly gone awfully quiet today, right alongside their Quebec counterparts, conspiracy whackos, and Polish anti-EU eurosceptics
With Yandex data centers under constant attack, I’m starting to worry that the White House will issue yet another demand to stop the strikes. After all, it would be a tragedy if Russia’s valuable bot traffic dried up just before the midterms.
