Growing steadily — Clubs and members keep increasing due to demand and reliable rules. As of Dec 31, 2025: 557 active clubs with 19,589 registered members (average ~35 per club).
Now nationwide — Still strongest in Montevideo/coastal areas, but clubs exist in every province.
Very stable — Few closures; most clubs last long-term, proving the model works over time.
Big supply player — Clubs produce/distribute a major share of legal cannabis — in 2025, they harvested ~5,800 kg (up from ~4,143 kg in 2024), often rivaling or outpacing pharmacy sales (pharmacies sold ~4,290 kg in 2025, a record high).
Popular despite higher cost — Club cannabis usually costs more than pharmacy stuff, but members love the wider variety of strains and community/home-style growing, keeping clubs strong.

You should watch “Man Alive” documentary, The Hippie Trail the famous overland journey taken by hundreds of thousands of Western hippies and counterculture travelers from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s. It ran from Europe (often starting in London or Amsterdam) through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, typically ending in Kathmandu (Nepal) or extending to Southeast Asia (Thailand, Bali, etc.).
Travelers sought spiritual enlightenment, cheap living, hashish and other drugs, Eastern mysticism, and escape from Western society. They hitchhiked, took cheap buses (like the “Asian Greyhound” services), stayed in hippie hostels, and gathered at spots like Istanbul’s Pudding Shop (a legendary bulletin-board meeting point).
