How many languages can you speak? How about Arabic, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Syriac, Sabaic, Turkish, Persian, Armenian, and Sanskrit? That’s how many D. S. Margoliouth mastered! 🤯 Read about him in @ccsahner’s #NewCollegeNote 👇 ow.ly/cZPq50Zy3HZ #EuropeanDayOfLanguages

The village of Jubb'adin north of Damascus defies the standard rule of religious and linguistic change in Syria across time, namely that Islamization usually entailed Arabization. Here we see Muslims speaking a language usually associated only with Christians 1/

I’d like to know when Jubb'adin became predominantly Muslim. The more famous village of Maaloula, located nearby, is Aramaic-speaking but mainly Christian, which follows the typical pattern 2/

The ambassador’s level of Arabic is impressive and—I’d venture to say—unusual by the standards of Western diplomats willing to speak Arabic on camera!
UK Ambassador Stephen Hitchen marks one year since arriving in Saudi Arabia with an Arabic post thanking the Saudi people for their generosity and warm hospitality, reflecting on visits to Madinah, Ta'if, Jeddah, Abha, and other cities across the Kingdom.

#Syria: yesterday, the Basilica of Deir Semaan (St Simeon) saw its first pilgrimage in 15 years. The event was held on the occasion of St Simeon the Stylite's feast day, according to the Christian calendar. The column of St Simeon was restored last month in the Basilica: nitter.cf/QalaatAlMudiq/status/2…
#Syria: Qalaat Semaan (St. Simeon) is a majestic Byzantine site dating back to the 5th century, located in the NW. #Aleppo countryside. The site features a large Church, built with monumental masonry and imposing arches, as well as a monastery. According to the tradition, Simeon - an ascetic monk - lived atop a pillar for decades, earning him the name "Stylite" (from the Greek stylos, meaning pillar). St. Simeon is part of UNESCO World Heritage. The site was bombed multiple times during the war and sustained severe damage with a monumental arch & the main column destroyed. It was also struck by a Russian airstrike on 12th May 2016: nitter.cf/thiqanewsagency/status… The current goal is to consolidate the structures, with the aim of reopening the site to tourists.
