Day 31of OCTO-ber! We made it! Today is the larger Pacific striped octopus. This octopus still lacks a scientific name, but for decades was called "Octopus X" by the citizen scientist, artist, and diver who helped study it, Arcadio Rodaniche. Stripes aren't the only unusual thing about this mysterious octopus. It's also known for behavior that has challenged assumptions about how solitary octopuses can be. 🐙 The more you learn, the more questions appear. That's where OCTOPUS X begins. Order your copy now to learn more about this understudied species And thank you for enjoying all things octopus for OCTO-ber!

Happy Halloween! Issue #26 of TONMO Cephalopod News: why New England's longfin squid ran months late, fishermen helping build a new squid assessment, Halloween on the Octopodcast, and a deep-sea octopus that chased an ROV's lasers like a cat. 🐙

Day 30 of OCTO-ber is the lesser Pacific striped octopus (Octopus chierchiae). Tiny, striped, and striking, this species has become especially interesting to researchers studying octopus behavior and reproduction. 🦓 It also is the sister species of OCTOPUS X. Stay tuned for the final reveal tomorrow.

Day 29 of OCTO-ber: Octopus laqueus lacks a common name but may be one of the more tolerant octopus species toward its fellow octopuses. It's a species you've probably never heard of, but is quietly rewriting parts of octopus behavior. It was also a really cool species to write about 🐙 Two days. Two octopuses left, and these are the big ones for OCTOPUS X. Preorder your copy below:

Day 26 of OCTO-ber is the Pearl octopus (Muusoctopus robustus). Two miles beneath the surface, something remarkable was happening: Pearl Octopuses were brooding their eggs near a deep-sea seamount in California. Does this mean they're more #social than other octopuses? 🌊 The deeper you go, the stranger the story gets. Descend into OCTOPUS X.

Day 25 of OCTO-ber is the Dorado octopus. This octopus lacks a scientific name and is a deep-sea mystery. ✨ Scientists discovered the Dorado Octopus near hydrothermal springs off Costa Rica, where females were seen brooding their eggs.🌋🐙 There are still octopuses waiting to be discovered. Find out more in OCTOPUS X.

Day 24 of OCTO-ber is the curled Octopus (Eledone cirrhosa). Does it have one arm? Two rows of suckers? Nope. The curled octopus belongs to a group known for having a single row of suckers on each arm. Find out more about weird octopus anatomy in OCTOPUS X.

Day 21 of OCTO-ber is the algae octopus (Abdopus aculeatus). This octopus has one of the most complex mating interactions, where males can sneak in to mate with females, avoiding their dominant rivals. Does that make them capable of being #social? Find out more in OCTOPUS X.
