Qiulae Wong...Who?
Michael Laws has caused controversy over comments he made about two women from the Opportunity Party on his The Platform radio show on 29 October. The remarks have become major news today, 4 November 2026.
He was discussing Opportunity candidate Kayla Kingdon-Bebb, whom he'd met at an election debate.
Here's what he actually said:
Described her as resembling “every officious primary school teacher, female that I'd ever come across in my life”.
Added: “Must be hell dating people like that, just quietly.”
Then said: “Can you imagine what it's like post-sex? Did I say that out loud? Yes, I did.”
Also reportedly criticised her dress length and lack of makeup.
He then attacked Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong, calling her an “authoritarian fascist” and referring to an “infant mistress”.
News Wire+1
The reaction has been significant:
Christopher Luxon: Called the remarks stupid and ruled Laws out of any Cabinet he leads.
Winston Peters: Said Laws would be told off but would remain an NZ First candidate.
Qiulae Wong: Called the comments absolutely disgusting and demanded Laws stand down.
Nicola Willis: Condemned the remarks as sexist and nasty.
