I have myself criticised @NawrockiKn on multiple occasions for his stance on Ukraine. Not visiting Kyiv since the beginning of his term is a major political miscalculation. I also consider the Polish right’s anti-German rhetoric to be oftentimes counterproductive, to say the least. Having said this, I regard the 🇵🇱 President’s remarks, quoted below, as utterly legitimate. For years, Berlin’s political & businesss elites were cozying up to the Kremlin, Nord Stream 2 being just one of myriad examples. I do believe Chancellor Merz is genuinely determined to change course once and for all. Nevertheless, it was not Polish politicians who met with their Russian counterparts in Baku last July. And it was not Nawrocki who insulted Ukrainians by naming a Polish military unit after a racist and rabidly anti-Ukrainian mass murderer. It was Zelensky glorifying Stepan Bandera.
Nawrocki can repeat day and night how he doesn’t like Russia, but there can be no policy more strategically favorable to Russian goals of dominating Europe than a Polish president who spends most of his time whipping up hostility and suspicion toward Poland’s two biggest 21st century neighbors, friends and allies, Germany and Ukraine.
