The partnership between @KlamathCC and Lost River High School is a model for communities across the state. Well done!

Just back from brief presser w/ @pdxteachers where @ABonillaPAT says she is confident that teachers will vote to ratify the TA.

🤞that the PDX teacher strike resolves in the next few days. Before it does, I wanted to highlight the voices of special education families, whose kids have really struggled with the disruption to routine and consistency. oregonlive.com/education/202…

Portland strike update:
Per *district* math, the 2 sides are still $200M+ apart.
Biggest cost differential now is class size. PAT proposal=$100M+352 new teachers. PPS=$4.5M to lower ratios.
Way closer on salary+planning time.

I remember my high school’s teacher strike fondly. It lasted 21 days, and because nobody was telling us anything or talking to us, we spent that time putting together an unauthorized issue of the school paper that we handed out when kids came back.

Heard lots of understandable concern at today’s Baker County #2023townhall about the just-announced closure of the maternity center in Baker City’s hospital. I’m all in to work with this community on solutions to ensure maternity care here & in rural Oregon remains strong.

"A photo of a car belonging to a student with four bullet holes in its rear passenger window was circulating among the Franklin community on Friday. Parents said that its teenaged owner was safely in the school library at the time the shots were fired."

There are candidates in every Zone now. Question is whether there will be any contested races. Meanwhile, lots of no-one-has-filed-yet seats in Eastern MultCo districts.
As of today, three of the four PPS board seats up for election in May have only one candidate. And in one seat (Zone 1) no one has filed.

Some stray observations (and my full story) from today's press avail on school safety:
1. That was a lot of firepower in one room, suggesting that the all-hands-on-deck calls are (finally?) being heard
2. As always, the student voices carry the most weight

Tears falling as I write this. The paper where I cut my teeth as a reporter, made lifelong friends, and that served Southern Oregon’s largest city for almost 120 years.
Two days’ notice to quietly die. A few weeks severance for decades of service. It’s so wrong.
One of the most storied newspapers in Oregon just went digital and now is going dark entirely. @mailtribune in Medford is history. A jolt for Oregon journalism. h/t @scottstoddard mailtribune.com/general-aler…

This is a story about algebra...wait, come back! It's also a story about tracking, honors/remedial classes, equity, privilege, college admissions and puzzling out the right answer. NEW from me today for @Oregonian.

At Grant HS today where @RonWyden is getting GRILLED by @PPSConnect students on guns, federal $ for education and free speech. Also a laugh when the senator calls 24 Hour Fitness “the 24-7 gym” with absolutely zero irony.

I so excited to return full-time to a beat I first covered for @AP in Oregon and then as I could these past 3 years at @PoMoMagazine. My hope is to focus on what schools and policymakers are — and are not — doing to help Oregon’s students after 2 years of pandemic upheaval.
