becoming one of those 60s science fiction writers who were obsessed with population control, but not for resource management reasons, just to make the internet more bearable

i gotta say the "for you" side of twitter devolving over the past 10 days into a globalized race war of all against all seems to generally bode ill
the twitter auto-translate function seems to be leading us to the third world war

watched a bit of the turnstile d.c. performance and unlike many of my equally withered peers i enjoyed seeing young people experiencing something unifying/cathartic/theirs. still kinda wish the music wasn't posi-core bromides sung over generically anthemic alt-rock but it's fine

i often think about my local library when i was a teen, specifically whatever mysterious cool librarian was doing the book buying, because they had things like the original translation of coin locker babies, which fucked my shit up good at 17/18
Author Ryu Murakami, whose edgy works explored sex, violence, and youth culture, has died, his publisher said Friday. He was 74. ebx.sh/LqglYT

pretty sure i only picked it up because it was obviously next to the books by the other famous murakami, and the cover of that original edition was sick in an extremely 1995 way, sometimes the "adolescent manga reader becomes obsessed with all things japanese" system works

i find it hard to believe that people who apparently read a ton of manga/watch a ton of anime are just now finding out that japan also has 1.) uptight nerds, 2.) racist incels, 3.) obnoxious ultra-nationalists, 4.) people so obsessed with nerd hobbies they venerate corporations

i know we've all basically accepted that one of the costs of modern living is being ceaselessly exposed to awful shit 24/7, but it's still weird to live in a world where "guy self-immolates on live video for an audience of teenagers" is just another blip in the data spew

it's easy to start sounding like tommy lee jones in no country for old men when talking about this stuff, but occasionally a piece of (soon to be forgotten) news does remind you that the human brain was probably not meant for this

even with the myriad ways he was fucked over by the comics industry, alan moore really lucked out that his loudest and most persistent critics for 40 years have been adult fans of superheroes, just a lion lazily swatting away gnats with his tail

i feel like i must have read this at the time and then completely forgot, but either way 30 years later rivers being a big joe matt fan is a real "mr. policeman i gave you all the clues" situation
Insane to make that Fugazi comparison to Cerebus considering this came out AFTER the "female void" stuff. Lol!

funny how the current version of this site is making me meaner and angrier than ever, but i'm also probably posting less than ever, so it probably evens out

if there's been a point to twitter since (at least) 2020 it's probably been arguing, but it's much harder to argue when most of the people saying the annoying shit are either literal children or close enough

"For fans of Bolaño and Houellebecq" RIYL: beloved and the turner diaries
A work of pitch black noir set in a Spanish underworld where crime, art, and metaphysics meet. For fans of Bolaño and Houellebecq, THE STARS is Carlos Maleno’s best and most ambitious novel yet.

comics vs. manga always essentially boils down to two groups fighting over which nation has the best YA books, but also there are probably more US comics readers who know about yoshiharu tsuge or kuniko tsurita than US manga readers who know about gary panter or lale westvind

the audience for anything actually interesting (and actually aimed at adults, rather than just more seinen melodrama or direct market genre junk) in both comics and manga was and remains extremely small, most of what's produced is mediocre or worse, true for anything

i have also read a lot of crappy comics (from many countries) and crappy manga, and it's fine, another minor soothing distraction on the way to the grave
