Sharing @edwardwhitenz's excellent Fifth Plenum preview in @FT. Glad to be quoted.
Most China watchers think a revived Party chairmanship is very unlikely. I'm not so sure.
Deng and Jiang ruled through bargains among elders and factions, so they could step back safely. Xi rules by fear. He has taken down even Zhang Youxia, Miao Hua and Zhong Shaojun, his own trusted generals who seemed untouchable. A ruler like this cannot let go.
And power ends at death. Only Mao got around that. Deng, twice purged by Mao, still would not repudiate him, because repudiating Mao meant repudiating the Party itself.
That is the height Xi needs. Short of it, he will be torn down after he dies.

Just kidding 😂😂😂
Ji Lin and Cong Liang are likely due to health reasons, while Fu Wenhua and Zhu Wenxiang come from military backgrounds—none of this is surprising. What is more unexpected is Zhu Hexin, now certain that he will not be taking the helm at the People’s Bank of China.
Ten alternate Central Committee members—Lu Dongliang, Bao Gang, Xing Shanping, Qu Yingpu, Lü Jun, Zhu Tianshu, Zhu Guoxian, Liu Jun, Liu Jie and Liu Qiang—were elevated to full membership. Five higher-ranked alternates were passed over: Fu Wenhua, Cong Liang, Jilin, Zhu Wenxiang and Zhu Hexin.
The plenum considered 34 disciplinary cases. It confirmed the expulsion of 33 officials, including Ma Xingrui, Zhang Youxia, Liu Zhenli, Liu Jianchao, Wang Lixia and a long list of senior military officers, including Zhong shaojun, and defense-industry executives. Li Yunze was removed from his Party posts rather than expelled.
Liu Jianchao got hit hard—actually expelled from the Party when even Li Yunze got to keep his membership. What is the criteria even based on?
Also, looks like no new members were added to the Central Military Commission either.
5th plenum communique out. Zhang Shengmin added to politburo, first addition of a new pb member at a plenum in 32 years, announced 21st party congress will meet in 2H 2027, lots of cases handled. And no let up in pressure on cadres and corruption and ideological discipline. Translation here sinocism.notion.site/Authori…
Today’s People’s Daily reported:
“Following General Secretary Xi Jinping’s guidance, the anti-corruption struggle will always sound the charge.”
沿着习近平总书记的指引,反腐败永远吹冲锋号。
Today’s front page is more of the same — still kissing up to Xi and arguing how great he is. It borrows the “full and rigorous Party self-governance” topic to keep doing theoretical elevation and core narrative, rather than actually talking about what the Party discipline drive itself is doing.

Today's front-page People's Daily (任仲平) essay is titled "Persistently Advancing Full and Rigorous Party Self-Governance on the New Journey." Such a phrase is the Party's term for anti-corruption and discipline drive, yet the essay barely mentions graft, discipline inspectors or Party rules. It is basically one long bootlicking session for Xi.

There’s also a People’s Daily commentator article (任平) on the front page; after reading it I have no idea what it’s actually saying, except that it keeps repeating “walk the new Long March well.” Looks like Xi is going to keep leading the whole Party, the whole army, and the whole nation through hard times.
Cai Qi looks impressive—first secretary of the Secretariat, director of the General Office, always by Xi’s side. But he can’t actually command the other Secretariat secretaries. His real influence with Xi is far less than Li Qiang’s, and even less than He Lifeng’s.
Li Qiang and Cai Qi are Xi’s two most indispensable aides—one overseeing government affairs, the other party affairs. Together, they constitute the “central gang of three” that defines elite politics in the Xi era. foreignpolicy.com/2026/10/21…

It is reported that another Huawei AITO vehicle spontaneously caught fire today. The incident took place in Shiyan, Hubei.
On October 17, 2026, another Huawei-backed AITO car (M9) crashed into a traffic light pole and caught fire in Shenmu, Shaanxi, killing the driver.
Huawei/AITO claims the speed was 139.1 km/h (about 86.4 mph) in a 50 km/h zone. From the surveillance footage, it clearly doesn’t look anywhere near that fast. But in China, whatever Huawei says is usually taken as fact.
Same advice as always: don’t buy Chinese cars.
Replying to @allie_matthias
@allie_matthias and I have a new piece out previewing next week's CCP plenum. Happy Friday!
