We weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). Hosting the South Sudan Council of Churches at Lambeth Palace, we heard their longing for an end to the violence, killings and insecurity in the country, and have witnessed their tireless role in peacebuilding, and working towards a better future. As elections approach in December, we commit to stand with the people of South Sudan - in solidarity, in prayer and the in spirit of the Ecumenical Peace Pilgrimage. We also know that far more than elections will be needed for peace. We pray that leaders will have priorities aligned with the heart of Jesus Christ.

Great to see this piece about Choral Evensong by a sitting MP. “We should not celebrate this simply as a remarkable broadcasting survival story. We should celebrate it because it represents something much bigger: a living part of our cultural heritage.” theguardian.com/music/2026/o…

Churches across this country and around the Anglican Communion work tirelessly to support their parishes and communities. It was good to welcome the former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and the Bishop of Leicester, Martyn Snow, to Lambeth Palace today, where we talked about the role that churches play in addressing poverty and expanding opportunities for children and families here and around the world.

I welcome the Government's announcement to bring forward proposals to regulate the funeral sector. This is essential work to make sure no family has to go through events such as we have witnessed in Hull, and ensure those who have died are treated with dignity and respect, as very many funeral directors already do. It was good to be in Parliament today to hear about the government's proposals and ask them about timescales and also what help could we be given to poorer families for whom funerals can be so expensive.

I’m praying for Andy Burnham today as he becomes Prime Minister. At a time of many challenges at home and abroad, I pray that all those in political leadership are blessed with wisdom, hope and a vision of the common good. I’m also grateful to Sir Keir Starmer for his service, and will be praying for him and his family as they begin their next chapter.

I am deeply shocked and saddened by Ann Widdecombe’s death in such terrible circumstances. My prayers are with her family and friends at this traumatic time. Ann had a deep Christian faith, which drove her strong principles in a career spent as a committed public servant. As I give thanks for her service to our country, my prayers are with all those who are in shock and grief, and all who put themselves forward for public office.

It was good to meet with the Work and Pensions Secretary, Pat McFadden and the Bishop of Leicester, Martyn Snow, to discuss efforts to help people into work. Churches have an important role to play here – running job clubs, youth clubs, debt advice centres and boosting confidence so that people are supported into fair, secure and dignified work. Our youth and children's workers are also working with young people and encouraging them to use their skills and gifts.
