How did I get started?
I had been interested in trading for many years and made all the foolish mistakes one can make.
Moved from a discretionary to a quantitative approach and again made the typical mistakes, for example:
- Wanting to apply my favourite fancy ML algorithms
- Wanting to find unique alphas to feel smart
- Overlooking the beauty of simplicity
Then the realisation came that I needed to do simple things that have a proven track record in other markets.
Shoutout to @ScottPh77711570 the legend, who gave me the inspiration and the final nudge to get started with trend in crypto after listening to his episode on @choffstein's brilliant podcast.
Thank you to @investingidiocy and @clenow for your excellent books on designing and researching trading systems.
Shoutout also to @noalphadecay who inspired me to share my process here with everyone.
Too funny. My feed is now full of prop trading scammers, trying to distance themselves from another prop trading scammer which was exposed as a scammer.
Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, this is pot.
Right, should I stop picking 'gurus'? It's just so many of these get-rich-quick nonsense peddlers on here, it's hard to stay clear of them.
Sure, some are just trying to make money any way they can. My issue is that they cause harm to others.
So it seems as if this site is full of anonymous people with supernatural trading skills, able to outperform any of us old boring finance guys.
Odd that they all decided not to get a job in the finance industry where they could easily make tens of millions a year.
Recently I started looking at this site again. I just don't get what's going on.
A huge amount of hobby traders behave like they are in a cult. Scamming "mentors" and brainwashed acolytes.
No interest in reality. Cult like worship of con men.
Pigeon Chess situation.
Why is my feed full of people insulting quants without having the first clue what a quant is or does?
I just finished the second edition of Python of Algorithmic Trading Cookbook by @jasonstrimpel . The first edition was excellent and this updated second edition does not disappoint.
Highly recommended read. Good job, Jason!

Andreas Clenow (@clenow) has seen markets from a very different lens - from the underground computer world of the 1980s to managing nine-figure capital today.
In the 6th episode of In The Money by Zerodha Podcast, we explore how his thinking has evolved over time and why he believes much of the managed futures space has now become commoditized.
We get into some interesting questions - what really separates trend following from equity momentum, why simple systems often work better than complex ones, and what it actually takes to survive phases like 2008.
He also shares why looking at a portfolio as a whole matters more than focusing on individual trades, and why programming is becoming essential for anyone serious about trading today.
This one is less about textbook ideas and more about how things actually play out in the real world.
If you’re curious about systematic trading and how professionals think about it, this conversation will stay with you.

$TSLA is the biggest bubble in stock market history with a market cap of $1.6T. Never before has a single stock been so overpriced at such a scale.
$TSLA auto sales are in free fall
and will decline double digits in 2026.
Next year will be the third consecutive year of declining unit sales.
There will be no robotaxis for many years as approval takes years and $TSLA has not even filed the necessary applications. $TSLA just admitted to the California DMV,
“The currently enabled Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”
They will sell zero robots in 2026.
The competition is way ahead.
The share price is sustained only by the lies of @elonmusk
Earnings estimates continue to collapse. Estimates for 2025 have
gone from $8 to 1.65 yet the share price has more than doubled from the April 2025 lows. I expect the share price to ultimately converge with the decline in profits.
Pent up selling (for tax purposes), the failure to launch paid robotaxis and the announcement of horrendous 4q deliveries may well cause the stock to crater early in the new year.
Fair value is perhaps $50.
The emperor is wearing no clothes. Look out below.
@GordonJohnson19 @BradMunchen @TommyThornton @MichaelMOTTCM @zerohedge @doomerzoomer @unusual_whales @maggielake @adamtaggart @JulianMI2 @JackFarley96 @DarioCpx
This isn’t widely understood, & if accurate, matters. Musk said $TSLA would have 500 robotaxis operating in Austin by yr-end. If the reality is 3 to 5 vehicles, that’s not a rounding error - it’s a categorical failure. Since roughly June, the stock has doubled, fueled in large part by the robotaxi narrative. If the gap between promise and reality is this wide, investors should at least consider whether the rally was driven by execution - or by misrepresentation.
I'm half way there, people! Never give up on your dreams!

Flight attendant comes over intercom: “your flight is oversold, I need two volunteers to take a flight this afternoon for a $300 voucher.”
I spring into action. I was born for these moments. This is why I studied game theory. Literal tingles. I pull out my megaphone and address our boarding gate: “guys, they absolutely must off board at least two passengers or this bird isn’t taking off. Every 3 minutes they will increase their bid by $200. If we all hold out for 45 more minutes, 2 of us can make nearly 5 grand each. Textbook prisoners dilemma, this is (3,3) in its most visceral representation. I’m not even going to give up my ticket but I know value when I see value. Let’s make Nash proud ladies and gentlemen. Do not acquiesce. Do not defect.”
Anyhow 2 people immediately accepted $500 and I called them retards on my megaphone and was placed in a detention room by airport police. This is why we study game theory.
Someone's playing with the algo. My feed is suddenly full of bitcon scammers and rather extreme political hate mongering.

An old man stopped me on the street
"That's a great watch!" he said
"Thanks," I replied. "But it's not just a watch. It's a symbol of how incredibly rich I am compared to everyone else."
He scoffed.
"It might be expensive, but it tells time just the same as a $5 Timex"
Then he asked me for the time before rushing off.
"It's 6:15pm," I told him.
It was actually 7pm.
He missed the last train out of the city that night.
And his wife was convinced he was having an affair because he arrived home 3 hours late, sweaty from the long walk home.
Lesson: Buy you own watch next time buddy.
Me on stage in Dubai last week: "Sure, you may think I stole this from @investingidiocy, but if he didn't want me to steal his ideas, he really shouldn't put them in a book."

Great book about futures trend following by @clenow. I personally loved the chapters analyzing each year performance of the strategy. Will follow with Carver and Covel books.
This was one of the oddest interviews I've done. Arabic speakers will understand why I crack up near the end when I hear the translated question in my ear.

Former CEO of CMT Association and CFA Association caught stealing 600k from the CMT. If I was a member of the CFA, I'd be looking into the books in great detail at this point.

A great book by my friend Tal. If you want to learn from someone who's actually been there, done this and had great success in the field, this is the book to read.
