I'm embarrassed to admit it, but it's true: I procrastinated on setting up a custom domain for my climate politics newsletter until @elonmusk started censoring substack links.
Welcome to HillHeat.News!
carbon emissions go up
and they're only modeling CO2 pollution from the power sector, WITH FIXED DEMAND
Resources For the Future has released its modeling on the Senate permitting bill.
Top findings:
- Increase transmission capacity by 30% by 2041
- Would facilitate 60GW of clean energy in 2028
- Reduce carbon emissions by 1.8 gigatonnes through 2041

I love the premise that rob isn't an advocate
The BAAJA permitting bill has divided environmental and clean energy advocates.
Which is fascinating, of course. But because reporters love to cover conflict, I suspect we’ve focused too little on the parts of the bill most climate advocates really like.
So for the latest Shift Key, I spoke to @DavidPomerantz about how the bill would remake the power grid and why it represents a historic victory against monopoly utility power: heatmap.news/podcast/shift-k…
breaking his own ceasefire, where have I seen that before
Replying to @climatebrad @rff
I’ve already reprimanded Tom, but this post is in violation of the BAAJA cease fire. Enjoy the candy and see you on Monday.
lol at coming to X where people are so braindead they insist 1.64 is smaller than 1.4
don't worry @jaeporeon this is sincerely hilarious to me

He’s correct. The abundance movement is akin to the Koch network in many respects, indeed some of the key abundance groups have received funding from the Koch orgs etc. It’s clearly a movement opposed to traditional environmental and conservation concerns.
Once again for those in the back. The mainstream green groups were never going to be part of the abundance coalition that was going to get serious about building a clean energy future. A lot of people were upset at me when I said this at the first Abundance Conference but everything that has happened since has pretty well proved my point, starting with the protest immediately after my speech and culminating with the full court press by the movement to kill permitting reform.
I worry for anyone who sincerely that @rff blog post is an accurate representation of climate pathways after the passage of BAAJA
imagine promoting an AI acceleration bill as good for jobs
The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act will help deliver cheaper energy for New Mexico homes, more jobs for New Mexico workers, and make sure that our energy growth is both responsible and future-forward. abqjournal.com/opinion/opini…

ALT Senator Martin Heinrich speaking at a podium with a microphone, wearing a blue shirt. The podium displays the logo of "SunZia" and the Albuquerque Journal is mentioned in the top left corner. The text on the right reads, "OPINION: A better way to build: Lower costs, more jobs, responsible growth and data center accountability." The background features a clear blue sky.
oh... Grover Norquist backs #BAAJA. It must be a good bill

this is the @brianschatz I like
Unfortunately it's not clear that there are any provisions that deliver "emissions reductions".
Replying to @christygoldfuss
This is a bill to build, both fossil and clean. We want to make sure the provisions of the bill that deliver emissions reductions are worthy of the tradeoffs on water, wildlife, democratic norms and other weakened environmental protections. That's the analysis the public deserves, and that’s our job. Sorry if that takes more than a minute.

The People’s Environmental Justice Caucus, founded by and composed of Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Summer Lee (D-Pa.) and Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.), opposes the permitting reform bill.
“This bad deal trades lifetimes of pollution and harm for pennies in relief," they said.

yes, I agree this bill is about other things: transmission legislation negotiated from an absurd position of weakness resulting in a terrible deal that will enshrine increased US fossil fuel production and exports for two generations, locking in Environmental Justice harms
Replying to @TysonSlocum
Whitehouse and Heinrich clearly care a lot about climate. But this bill is about other things. We climate people need to stop acting like our thing is all that matters and everything is about us.
the thing all the #BAAJA boosters are trying to avoid is @SenSchumer having to admit he's whipping for the bill on behalf of Wall Street
I love conspiracy theorists... they see real problems but believe in bizarre causes
#BAAJA is a "bird-killing, whale-killing, electricity-price-raising" disaster.
Because it gets rid of environmental laws.
The simple explanation is usually right!

The Senate permitting bill would let FERC site interstate lines over a state's objection and bill customers by estimated benefits. MISO valued three benefits of a $22B portfolio at $38.3B at the low end. Five states' consultant: $4.3B to $7.2B. New brief: southwestpolicy.com/transmis…
"status quo" = assuming the AI bubble grows forever

2 years of bad faith arguments and 2 months of transactional approvals just to slam this nuke of a bill through. How do you fall for this?
