"Two mighty meteors — of sun- and moon-like apparent size and shape — appear threateningly with their accompaniments. The star-world falls into turmoil, and the actual war begins: the Morning Star (Venus) opens it, standing on the back of Leo. Seven months later a new heaven results, as the Sun moves from about mid-Virgo to mid-Aries. The stars that ruled the dawning morning sky plunge at last into Okeanos and set the earth afire. Such is the fundamental thought — recognized only once facts beneath poetry's veil are laid bare."[1] That passage is from Franz Xaver Kugler S.J.'s somewhat rare[2] *Sibyllinischer Sternkampf und Phaëthon in naturgeschichtlicher Beleuchtung* (Münster, 1927), translated into English (possibly for the first time). Kugler was one of the few people alive in 1927 who could read Babylonian cuneiform astronomical and astral-mythological texts - the man whose *Sternkunde und Sterndienst in Babel* remains foundational for understanding how Mesopotamian priests tracked Venus, the planets, and heliacal risings centuries before our era. When he took up the Sibylline "war of the stars" that generations of editors had dismissed as a madman's finale. Blass called it insane; Geffcken and the mathematician E. Hoppe declared it, from any standpoint, complete nonsense. Kugler did not reach for mythic metaphor. He reached for an ephemeris. What he found is striking regardless of whether one accepts his ultimate identification of Phaëthon with a meteor. Working through computed star positions and rising-and-setting times around 100 B.C., Kugler showed that the "insane finale" describes, verse by verse, *real* astronomical events unfolding over exactly seven synodic months: Venus as morning star on Leo's back; Libra setting where Orion would later set; the Pleiades vanishing heliacally to pin the end-date near 8 April; Draco standing all night above a horizon that only fits latitude ~30° - Cairo or Alexandria. His conclusion that the poem was composed in Lower Egypt follows from the astronomy, not from assertion.
