Update: In the 27 months since Labour came to power, we've seen; • Employer National Insurance increased from 13.8% to 15%. • The employer NI threshold cut from Ā£9,100 to Ā£5,000. • The freeze on Income Tax and National Insurance thresholds extended to 2031. • Capital Gains Tax increased from 10% and 20% to 18% and 24%. • Business Asset Disposal Relief increased from 10% to 14%, then 18% – and now its lifetime limit halved to Ā£500,000. • Investors’ Relief raised to 18% and its lifetime limit cut from Ā£10 million to Ā£1 million. • CGT relief on sales to Employee Ownership Trusts halved. • Carried interest taxation increased and moved into the Income Tax regime. • Dividend tax rates increased by two percentage points. • Savings-income tax rates increased by four percentage points. • Property-income tax rates increased by four percentage points. • VCT income tax relief cut from 30% to 20%. • Most unused pension funds brought into the Inheritance Tax net. • Agricultural and Business Property Relief capped. • Inheritance Tax thresholds frozen until 2031. • The non-dom regime replaced with a tougher residence-based system. • VAT imposed on private school fees. • Business-rates relief removed from private schools. • The Stamp Duty surcharge on second homes and buy-to-let raised from 3% to 5%. • The Furnished Holiday Lettings regime abolished. • A new annual surcharge on homes worth Ā£2 million or more. • Pension salary-sacrifice NI relief capped at Ā£2,000 a year. • The bank surcharge doubled. • Capital allowances for plant and machinery cut twice. • Online gaming duty almost doubled. • The Energy Profits Levy increased and extended, and its investment allowance scrapped. • Vaping Products Duty brought in and tobacco duties increased above inflation. • Vehicle Excise Duty increased for many new cars, with electric vehicles brought in. • A pay-per-mile tax on electric and plug-in hybrid cars legislated for 2028. • Air Passenger Duty increased. • Making Tax Digital extended to more landlords and self-employed people. Together they represent one of the biggest transfers of wealth from households and businesses to the Treasury in decades – with little to show for it in public services. Whether you're a business owner employing staff, a parent paying school fees, a farmer planning succession, an entrepreneur building wealth or simply someone trying to save for your family’s future... - You keep less of what you earn. - You keep less of what you invest. - You leave less for your family. Death by a thousand cuts.

It’s useless to capture everything and shove it all into an LLM. The noise is so much it negates all utility. Who cares about a micro decision made 12 months ago, even 3 months ago? There’s a reason we thankfully forget this stuff and only retain relevant memories.
i’m not convinced that ā€œcontextā€ is the real bottleneck here. for lots of orgs, all the meetings are captured in granola. all async comms are in slack. all docs are in notion. I’ve even seen teams check their agent logs into shared repos. all of these have ample MCPs and CLIs that all agents can access. the context is there, everything is legible, and yet— the problem is that it is stored, retrieved, and acted on non-deterministically. it’s unstructured and out of date and there’s way too much of it. it’s an unreliable mess. the agents (and humans) can only do so much with that, and the result isn’t at all what people imagine when they design agentic systems, because nobody can trust it.

After 10 weeks it’s time to fly out of Japan, it feels like I left my heart here. What a beautiful people, culture and country.

I should print and send this to some friends in UK accounting… > I think it’s very hard to accept the exponential when it threatens something you’ve spent your entire life building, especially when your career is such a big part of your identity.
Never doubt the AI exponential, because it can catch up with your entire career while you’re still explaining why your profession is special. Just listened to CĆ©dric Villani, a Fields Medal winner, talking about how shocked he was by the progress of AI. Funny because I met him twice, including around 2018 when he was a Member of Parliament leading France’s AI mission, and we were already discussing how fast NLP was progressing with the new transformers. France has 13 Fields Medals, second only to the US, and some of the brightest people I know come from that world. A lot of them have been caught by surprise despite following AI for years and using the products themselves. I think it’s very hard to accept the exponential when it threatens something you’ve spent your entire life building, especially when your career is such a big part of your identity. You can see what’s happening to graphic designers or software engineers and still convince yourself that your own work will take another 20 years. My guess is every intellectual profession will go through this, and honestly, even believing in the exponential doesn’t prepare you for the consequences. I work on this stuff all day, I expect progress to keep compounding, and I still struggle to imagine what that means a few years from now. I don’t think nature has equipped us to really grasp exponential growth. We can understand the math and still struggle to imagine what it means for our own lives, even while watching it happen.

We finally have an explanation for ā€œFacebook is listening to me through my phoneā€. They’d never do that (and it’s not really possible). Turns out literally everyone else was — and then selling that to ad data brokers.
WTF, $3000 Samsung TV has an always-on mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, and ships your data to Samsung + 400 partners. Bro Rooted a brand-new 2025 Samsung TV after noticing absurdly targeted ads. Firmware was locked down, so zero-days it was. Got a root shell. then found: always-on voice service, ACR, geo, full telemetry pipeline, and four separate DRM systems. This isn’t a bug, It’s the product bro.

The Asian Century indeed

this is true
Tokyo is the only city where I don’t spend any time researching restaurants or looking at reviews. I literally just walk in any direction and if any place looks cool I go in. Every single time the food has been amazing. Yet to have and meal in Japan. Btw all the meals in the pics were around 6-12 USD
