On the right track... The Oxford–Cambridge growth corridor is a subject that has acquired a remarkable number of names, acronyms, strategies, and institutional arrangements over the years. Beneath all of that complexity is a fairly simple proposition: Oxford and Cambridge are two of Britain’s great economic centres and full of potential, they are only 66 miles apart, and they are currently much harder to travel between than they should be. The direct railway between the two cities closed in 1967. Today, travelling between the two cities by public transport can mean a journey through London of two and a half hours or more. By car, the roads between them are increasingly congested prolonging the already two-hour long journey. East West Rail offers the chance to put the two cities, and the towns between them, back on the same map, but the central argument from our panel was that the railway cannot be the whole story. If we simply put down tracks then proceed with business as usual, building stations surrounded by car parks and allow low-density development to spread around them, we will have spent an enormous amount of money but have failed to capture the full opportunity. There is, therefore, more to the question of ‘how should we connect Oxford and Cambridge?’ than initially meets the eye. Well said. Needs to be FAR more focus on bringing the democracy forward and pre-approving locally acceptable intensification. Current approach still relies too much on largest housebuilders who, with best will in world, will never get us there...
