Indeed @creativeHigg I'm writing one page WAGOLL scripts like this as models to secure the technical terminology that I expect children to be able to articulately apply...
A knowledge rich curriculum is not sacrificed to Oracy.
Implemented with consciousness and understanding, Oracy allows mastery of different disciplines to evolve more deeply,
'When I speak like a historian, I think like a historian.'
@findingmvoice
The Oracy debates derive from
1) Not speaking to a shared definition of what #oracy actually is.
2) Not sharing the same view on the purpose of education, or how we achieve that purpose.
Ironically, we need to engage in listening to each other to grow a shared understanding.

For years most progressive educators did NOT argue *against* knowledge. That was a caricature spun by some 'knowledge-rich' advocates. In my case, I was horrified by how impoverished knowledge looked in the curricula emerging from this new world view. englishandmedia.co.uk/blog/k…
If only people put as much effort into solving the fact that 1/3 of our children leave school year on year branded 'a failure' as they do into amplifying the challenges with the old Speaking and listening measures.
Detail over purpose.
The education killer.

Audiences are silent in plays. Audiences are silent in concerts. Patients are silent in operations -after being anaesthetised. Children are not anaesthetised (or shouldn't be!). They contribute, respond, change the direction, alter the script, require/take part in improvisation.
Actors use scripts. Musicians use sheet music. Surgeons follow established procedures.
Why are scripts for teachers treated as an affront to professionalism?
@ehanford explains why Direct Instruction uses them.

If you want to know more about spoken language & why it's helpful to know something about it in order to teach it, this by Prof Ron Carter is terrific. He's the GOAT in my books! Puts paid to the idea of children talking in full sentences! naldic.org.uk/Resources/NALD…

5/5 After @LucyMPowell called for "a culture of collaboration not competition" at @CSTvoice, this is the question worth asking. Who do our schools belong to?

We can see talk as a frivolous act. Something we do that wastes precious teaching time.

I understand a debate around the enactment/assessment of Oracy.
I do not understand why anyone would argue it's not a good thing.
The struggle is real; Poor Mental health, Existential Challenges, Polarisation
Oracy...
It's about presence.
Together.
Being more human. 🙏🏼

Talking of #oracy, in this @guardian piece @LucyMPowell references my comments on disciplinary oracy ... eg how explaining, describing, justifying and debating mathematical models deepens students' understanding of maths:

A Cautionary Tale 😔
My daughter thought she was in middle set for science. She was so excited she did a whole physics workbook in the summer.
Turns out she was wrong. She's in bottom set but the teacher said if they work hard they can move up.
She now hates science.
It's a testament to the system itself not being built for all...
'Inclusion' much?

I'm reposting this before the new term, hoping primary school teachers & librarians might think about getting a copy for their classrooms or library. (One of the poems is on @poetrybyheart timeline & one has been chosen for an upcoming @natpoetrylib poem of the week!)
I'm so delighted to have this review of my collection 'Snap! Poems for Children' in English 4-11, the primary English magazine of @NATEfeed @englishassoc @The_UKLA It's a real joy to get such wonderful feedback.
