1/ I got to teach Lucille Clifton’s “cream of wheat” yesterday and listen I’m an old white guy but I did my best leading a discussion of race, performance, ads, & exploitation, and a young Black woman in the class added a ton of depth to it and at the end…

2/ this other old white guy taking the class sat up and said “wait is THAT what the Aunt J*m*m* thing was about a few years ago?” and I could SEE it sinking in and later he said he had just thought it was ppl overreacting but he got it now and wanted to know more…

PhD students don’t want to be postdocs. Faculties are leaving academia... Intriguing discussions are published by both Nature and Science. Key points are: #science #research #engineering #academia #PhD #AcademicTwitter

Here's the format for “Literature Review Structure” which I used for two of my thesis. Hope it's useful! A 🧵 @PhDVoice @AcademicChatter @ThePhDPlace @PhD_Genie @PhDForum @PhDspeaks @OpenAcademics #AcademicTwitter #researcher #scicomm

Last day at my university (possibly ever teaching college). Bittersweet but excited about potential futures & new directions. Still, would love to hear it works out…do YOU have a story of a career restart you can share to ease my mind, academic or otherwise?

I know there’s a lot to be upset about today and it’s wrong of me to ask probably, but if you have any spare good feelings you can send my way I’d appreciate them. Today is sh*t both at a big picture and small scale for me. Thank you💜💜💜

Folks who have made the move from academia to industry: what's 1 piece of advice you'd share with PhD students looking to make a similar leap?

I get that the undermining of tenure is awful and I sympathize, but a gentle reminder that non-TT faculty are often brilliant and not just “cheaper, terrible ones”

(My goal is just to point out that contingent faculty aren’t just D-tier subs for “real” faculty…this is language that I hear about us though, and even this person’s response had 29 likes w/ no replies/comments so it seems like ppl don’t recognize it’s an issue)
(And I obscured the info b/c the LAST thing a woman in academia needs is to be flooded with hateful comments for what I think is probably just a careless comment…please don’t go looking to attack her)
Also the idea that academia is like the general job market and one can hop from one tenured position to another at will is just…🤡🤡🤡
Okay, I’m not sure how many ppl pursuing higher ed are following me, and this may be public knowledge to some, but it was news to me so I thought I’d share for others like me. So theydies and gentlethems: THE POINT SYSTEM in academic hiring A thread 🧵

Basically, my university is hiring for some FT faculty positions (none TT). Someone on a hiring committee accidentally left a document outlining the “points” given to candidates based on application materials by the copier. 🧵 2/n

Anyway, this was new to me, and I thought it might be useful to other ppl out there. If you’re pursuing a job in academia (with 150-300 applicants for every job), it’s worth knowing these details, I think. 🧵 /end
I sort of feel like if they put this info in job postings, it would help. We applicants could calculate our own scores and then decide if we even stand a chance when applying. We wouldn’t waste hiring committee time that way, and we’d save some of our own busy schedule 🧵 ??/n

What kind of gets me is that so much of this is obscured. Only TT or Tenured faculty are on these hiring committees, and the only way I found out about the points system was a random memo left by a copier. 🧵 17/n
