Looming Raven
“A caw rattles through the air overhead, and the branches of a nearby tree shake with sudden agitation. Red eyes gleam between a spread of oily black wings—a raven clings to a barren branch with its slate-colored talons.
Its beak opens to release another raucous call, its gray tongue peeking out from its dark throat.”
Illustrated by Dean Spencer, written by Megan Garner, edited by Nicola Aquino.

Elf with an Ice-Blight Blade
“The elf appears like an avatar of the tundra itself. His visage, as perfect as a masterwork cut of marble, stares intently over the hilt of his blade held aloft. His eyes are shining pools of cold mana.
His cheek brushes against the wreath of white wolf fur about his collar, his mouth bearing the hint of an assured smile. Elven ears poke up from his silken, snow-white hair, which wafts gently even in the biting wind.
The sword he holds—a length of pure ice sculpted as a tapered blade—seems as beautiful and deadly as its master.”

Bloody Vampiric Skull
“A shaft of light cuts across a fanged grin, a gaunt cheekbone bereft of skin—a skull in the dark, party to foul deeds. A tang of iron lingers in the air.
The shadowed eye sockets suddenly flare, the gloom dissolving as a deep crimson glow takes over.”

Cold-Blooded Witch Curses a Home
“A woman in a black dress and hooded cloak emerges from the snowy night and approaches the stone-flagged building. Half of her form is cast in shadow. Despite her stark-white hair, she appears youthful and beautiful.
She peers into the window, eyes full of malice as they fall upon the infant sleeping within. She lifts her hand as if to caress the face of the image of the child, but when she gently places her fingertips on the windowpane, white lines of frost crackle out from her hand.
The frost overtakes the glass, obscuring the entire room in a frigid veil.”

Fog-Cloaked Graveyard
“Fog obscures the ground, the pliant earth sinking beneath each hidden footstep. The headstones rise above the cold and clinging veil, acting as bleak beacons to guide you. The efforts of a caretaker or groundskeeper are absent here.
The grass and shrubs are overgrown, with vining plants crawling up the pedestals of crosses and the feet of angels.
Some headstones are broken, their messages to the dead interrupted, like a breath stopped short.”
