did any of you guys have the experience of feeling humiliated by simply being a kid. when I was 6 I had this Disney princess beach towel. I was so embarrassed about it even though I was only 7 and I DID like princesses and that’s.. that’s normal 7 year old stuff. I turned it inside out to hide the princesses. And then in elementary school they’d play popular music during assemblies and I would literally put my head on my knees cause I was so embarrassed. My mom would dress me in a Gymboree kitten get up and I HATED it even though I liked kittens!
And this isn’t me being like, “I had mature tastes as a kid, guffaw, guffaw, guffaw.” Because I didn’t mind any of this stuff! I just felt humiliated constantly and I don’t understand why I felt like my own childish existence was embarrassing at such a young age.

Today in 1977, Voyager 1 took this image of the Earth and Moon in a single frame, captured from 7.25 million miles away. It was the first of its kind taken by a spacecraft.

When I was little, my dad did this kind of thing with me and I loved it. When my son was this age, this sort of thing terrified him so we didn’t do it. We found other play movements he did enjoy (spinning in the office chair, for example), but I had to adjust my expectations to match his wants.
There have been a lot of things that I loved doing when I was his age but that he just didn’t enjoy at all. I was an adrenaline junkie kid and loved doing dangerous stuff, and he is the exact opposite, very cautious.
On the one hand it has been sad for me to not be able to share those joyful experiences with him. But on the other hand, he has taught me how to attune to others more skillfully and recognize his uniqueness more clearly rather than projecting my expectations onto him.
I’m not sure what my point is here. I guess I’m just reacting to this video and reflecting on what it brings up for me.
