I believe this will be considered one of the most important videos in US history from this time.

What do you think would happen if we had a deadly outbreak of Bird Flu (H5N1), it then jumped to mammals (cattle), and we did nothing about it? In 2026, it's back and it's everywhere. Note: humans are mammals too.
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n… 1/

Kenneth isn’t kidding! This is the CDC map when you (a) use the original colors the CDC created and (b) show county data (c) if county doesn’t report data, use data from nearest county that does. That is honest reporting if CDC were honest
I checked the map. #wtfffffffff

Learn from the legend
Having long been aware of those tech bros who read my work as utopian porn, where they’ve taken that doesn’t exactly surprise me.

It looks like there may now be a therapy for Long Covid shown effective in a randomized clinical trial - fluvoxamine improved fatigue and quality of life compared to placebo: acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/…

Dear sanders.senate.gov , I am blocking all SMS txt spam on my phone, most of which is from Democratic candidates. But I want to know who needs money to prevent Trump from continuing a majority in congress. I trust your recommendation; what do you recommend I donate to?

Anthony Head, the cool bad-guy in Ted Lasso, just died a few months ago of pneumonia, caused by an undisclosed pathogen. I don't remember as a young adult so many deaths for "undisclosed" reasons.

Now tell me again like I'm a 4 year old (who wants to someday be a live adult). How is it that excess deaths in the US are STILL 10% higher than before the Covid pandemic AND we should not even bother wearing a $1.50 N95 mask because Covid is over?
Excess deaths USA. Enjoy your new normal, zombies!

That graphic uses a really reasonable baseline, which is the average deaths between 2015 and 2019:

Reminder, waves are not "getting smaller." If you glance at long-term trends, that may seem the case, but the past few years, waves are actually just getting more platykurtic (wider, less pointy). Transmission is only relatively lower since December. Details below.
This is a special graph we only post periodically. It shows 2 things that have considerable implications. 1) Transmission has been lower than anticipated since December, and *only* since December. It's a recent phenomenon, not a long-term trend. WastewaterSCAN has poor longitudinal standardization so sometimes people mistakenly believe waves are getting smaller and smaller (or they say this because their listserv subscribers like to hear it). CDC and Biobot make very long-term data difficult to find. On the PMC 13-wave graph (which integrates long-term CDC and Biobot data, some of which is measured weekly by hand!), wave height gets smaller, but the waves are wider (hard to perceive visually). The take-home is we're in a very weird place in the pandemic, not a trend, but either an aberration or shift. 2) Cumulative levels for the current year (Y7) closely resemble that of Year 2. This is where the debate of aberration vs shift gets interesting. If we are in an aberration of lower than typical transmission, that means many people are walking around with limited short-term infection-derived immunity, and most people are not recently boosted. That would be a tinder box for a saltation variant (MANY variants are circulating), and put us on that scary Y2 path. The alternative is that this is not an aberration but a more meaningful shift, some population-level immunity building through a combination of boosters, infection history, and the most vulnerable dying (social murder), meaning time between infection starting to increase. These divergent hypotheses are the difference between 150 million vs 325 million infections for Y7. If I were a gambler, I'd bet about 200 million. However, you can see the uncertainty. This is a time like no other to monitor the data closely. The good news is that wastewater monitoring is not going away. PMC will keep posting. Retired NASA scientist, Dr. Eastman at WHN (@jlerollblues), is close to having localized *forecasts* too. On Instagram, a new entrant is integrating different data sources with other methodologies. @CyFi10, @amethystarlight, and @CovidDataReport post nuanced updates frequently. My advice would be to talk to the people who will listen and remember that much more important than understanding the risk is knowing you can do something about it. Boosting is the easiest intervention. If someone will mask, teach them how to properly fit their nose wire and do a seal check, get them to upgrade from a KN95 with cheek and chin gaps to an N95 like 3M Aura or 3M VFlex in the riskiest or socially easiest contexts. Easier said than done, but if that pessimistic scenario plays out, they may be ready to listen.

The top graph shows our county-level COVlD map using the CDC's Standard Benchmarks. The bottom map shows the downshifted levels under the CDC's new system. This really makes a difference for early warning in the middle categories. I've highlighted 5 areas.
The CDC raised its benchmark for levels of the Covid virus in wastewater, adjusting a key metric for assessing the disease’s transmission. As a result, officials may now classify a level that once counted as high transmission as moderate instead. nbcnews.com/data-graphics/cd…

Great podcast featuring @WesElyMD titled "Long COVID: the problem society wants to forget". Wes led the group at the National Institute of Medicine that defined "Long Covid". He is a shameless patient advocate, and it's refreshing to hear the story: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

A PSA: do NOT download the White House app. It is doing something very weird with the sandbox permissions you give it. Which I’m not sure yet, but is likely against every service term and developer agreement on earth. I downloaded it so you don’t have to onto an air gapped old iPad. It is phoning home, asking for way too much personal data, and attempting to bypass location services permissions. Aside from the propaganda, it’s a security nightmare.

Incredibly important research funded by? The US CDC. And U. of Wisconsin, Madison! For those who skip the mask, or skip it until you board the plane? 98.3% chance your sucking SARS-COV-2 in the airport.

The CC people knew this already but not the level of increased risk. There were some surprises to me, though. For instance, after 2+ infections you are 5x more likely to get respiratory problems, and 4x more likely to get back problems. But who needs lungs and backs, right?

In the US, we can no longer get a Covid-19 study funded. But Canada ... Rescuing us again (Vietnam was #1). We love you, Canada. Canada showed if you get Covid-19 2x or more, you have a 76% increased chance of getting new health problems.

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to hear Bill Gates say this, half laughing, like, "duh" - "you got to be kidding!" "You can not expect an industry to regulate itself! That doesn't work!" No shit! Really? youtu.be/U4zGLSlLo5A?t=1207
