Black Ink 2.5 for iOS offers new inline clue lists that are particularly striking on iPhone Duo. redsweater.com/blog/4309/bla…
I believe that communicating effectively to AI is the most important skill, in all fields, going forward. Good news for literate and communicative folks: you've already got it.
Jacob is right, and history shows that tools making production easier never hurts the manufacturer. People still sell art, despite the fact you can buy paint and "do it yourself." People value authentic, complete products, and will continue to buy them from us.
I’m really trying to pretend this is true so RC doesn’t get steamrolled, but the more I think about it, the less I buy it.
1. Historically, the production of many types of goods have decreased dramatically in complexity and it didn’t transition to everyone just building it themselves. When electric tools were invented, did everyone transition to making their own furniture? Did the word processor end the book industry? Did the camera end the art industry? None of these quite match what we’re seeing but I haven’t found a case where humans have de-specialized.
2. Most consumers are exactly that, consumers. They are much lower agency than your average software person, probably lower creativity, and aren’t going to start building their own novel solutions to problems all of a sudden. Perhaps the models get so good they can do it somewhat transparently, but that would still require dictating requirements to the models, which itself is not something most consumers will be great at. And part of making “good” software is being opinionated. Models, due to the efforts of alignment, are limited in what they can say no to. The user asks for something that makes the software worse? “You’re absolutely right!” I’m not sure that taste and alignment are fully compatible.
3. Nothing ever happens. I think software will evolve, and what was a successful app three years ago will be very different three years from now, but it just doesn’t seem likely that after 10,000 years of increasing specialization and craftsmanship, humans will just resort to self reliance all of sudden. We want the expert opinion of other humans. We are interested in novel tools and experiences. Software products often bring with them community and identity that won’t go away. I just think an amplified version of the current trajectory more plausible than a complete reversal.
Tell me why I’m wrong!

Just posted @marsedit 5.4.6 with faster syntax coloring for long posts, lower CPU usage in the rich text editor, and a fix for posts getting stuck in "Publishing." redsweater.com/blog/4298/mar…
App developers can't be replaced by AI. Apps are expressions of human priorities. Like movies, essays, and paintings. And smiles, and hugs, and kisses. The ability of an AI to effectively replace ONE app says nothing about its ability to replace ALL apps. Humanity rules.

I dunno, maybe I'm crazy, but if you start a company like Automattic, with your own name in it, the board better have a pretty good reason for kicking you out. I'm excited to hear you're back in the captain's seat, @photomatt, both at Automattic and soon (?) on your boat.
They say the two happiest days in a person's life are the day they start being famous and the day they stop being famous. @photomatt
Oh hey everybody, I just remembered I keep receipts on the worst people who ever interact with me. Please don't forget that Vandad Nahavandipoor (@VandadNP) is a guy who thought it was OK to assure me that I would suck Trump's dick.
Speaking of dingalings. I want to remind everybody that you should never, ever, ever, work with Vandad Nahavandipoor (@VandadNP). He's a bad guy.
You might be wondering: is @danielpunkass so petty that he will relentlessly harp on an offensive tweet from 10 years ago? Yes, but also I'm so relentlessly real that I will not let the absolute worst actors on social networks go unchecked.
I appreciate the gesture, @HomeDepot, but I wonder if you don't get a lot of feedback?
After all the years of public embarrassment, I think my kids might finally appreciate, in a world filled with AI, that I simply cannot be replicated.
