If you're curious about how whiteness operates unchecked, look no further than Music City, USA. Almost 20 years of data shows how the country music industry excludes and devalues BIPOC artists (a thread) ⬇️

It is entirely possible to mourn Dolly and appreciate all she DID do, without fabricating things she DIDN’T do. Dolly bought property in the Black neighborhood that has now become the heavily gentrified 12 South. The “support” alluded to here wasn’t part of the plan.
Fun fact: Dolly Parton used the royalties from Whitney Houston’s rendition of “I Will Always Love You” to support a Black neighborhood, and support Black owned businesses. "I bought my big office complex down in Nashville. So I thought, 'Well, this is a wonderful place to be,'" Parton said. "I bought a property down in what was the Black area of town, and it was mostly just Black families and people that lived around there. It was off the beaten path from 16th Avenue and I thought, 'Well, I am gonna buy this place — the whole strip mall.' And I thought, 'This is the perfect place for me to be,' considering it was Whitney. I thought this was great — I'm just gonna be down here with her people, who are my people as well," she continued. "So I just love the fact that I spent that money on a complex and I think, 'This is the house that Whitney built.' "

With a pathway toward Grammy consideration in either direction, the Recording Academy has created more opportunity in country music — including for Black artists. "And that’s what we’ve been fighting for all along.” @AndreaWillWrite tennessean.com/story/opinion… via @tennessean

"With his raised eyebrows and slight chuckle, Shaboozey didn’t just cast doubt on country music’s century-old fiction. He also acknowledged the Black creatives who will never stand at the front of a stage or sing into a mic—but who are important, and influential, all the same."

Something that Tanya Talaga said a couple of weeks ago that hasn’t left me: when you think of Murray, think of the weight of hearing thousands of accounts of untold horror, and the toll it would take on your body. Think of taking that on. cbc.ca/news/politics/murray-…
