🎉📢 I'm on the tenure track job market! 👋✨ I study how people building “AI” think about the downstream harms their work makes possible, and the epistemic and political economic systems which shape their thoughts, and our future.

Maybe I’m quite naive, but after two years of a PhD at Harvard, I’ve come to a few realizations about higher education: 1) Many faculty members genuinely seem to despite students. students become ego boosters until they disagree with them, at which point they become competitors 2) Scholarly integrity is a mystery. Implicit scamming / conflicts of interest are very common esp with industry collaborations 3) The wind shifts depending on where you stand 4) Very few faculty will stand up for what they believe is right once there’s a potential career cost attached My innocent undergrad years are gone. I was once so happy learning for learning’s sake and would drop by my undergrad professor (mentor)’s office once in a while just to muse about life. And he’s someone who’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes is right, even after receiving a few death threats.

Hey, I'm in Austin Texas now. I'm pursuing a PhD at UT Austin, working with @davidthewid, where I'm going to be thinking about AI and tech refusal (which, in my mind, is very broad and generally inclusive). lmk if you're in the area.

Replying to @TaliaRinger
This 100%. Banning foreign open weight models from use in the US only dooms us to obsolescence. We should instead be funding open weight (and open source) models produced in the US!

We show how further funding is justified via continual claims that AI faces only ‘one small problem’ impeding its usefulness for military goals. Finally, we examine how DARPA seeks to use AI on the battlefield, including this chilling graphic: We release our data.

Yes, it's an AI hype bubble, but no, it popping isn't something we can cheer, either. From Mar Hicks and I, back in 2024: ash.harvard.edu/resources/wa…

🫧The news is finally asking about an AI Bubble, and when it will pop. Good!🎈 Our data shows how we got here. Big Cloud is frantically investing in AI startups to build market share and justify their *massive* investments in AI infrastructure. Graphs as hype-antidote, here:

i have lost and continue to lose respect for my male comrades over being flippant. do you think adopting a glib or dismissive tone makes you sound better read, better organised, more radical? it doesn't. i trust that your politics are rooted in your compassion, so act like it.
