Credit where it's due. The atmosphere tonight at Anfield has been superb. One of those proper European nights under the lights. Bit weird that they sang everything in French though

It is slightly alarming how little people seem to know about general finances. So let's tackle some of the commonly made mistakes: 1. The club cannot unilaterally terminate contracts of non-performing players. It doesn't work that way. You have signed a contract with a player and you have to honor it. Or you must provide sufficient financial compensation in order to release him from his contract (which is not advisable in a PSR-led world). Even during a sale, the purchasing club must establish an appropriate wage structure with him and he might even seek compensation from the current club for the premature termination of his contract. So the club for example cannot terminate the contracts of Casemiro, Shaw, Mount, etc as much as you wish them to. It is unfair that they still get to earn millions but common people have to lose their jobs. But there is nothing to be done. 2. Ineos cannot simply clear the debt till they remain the minority owners. For starters they aren't allowed to do so unless there is an equity swap which would require shareholder-approval. And seriously, why would you put your own cash into something you don’t fully own? You’re not getting anything out of it. So let's wait for majority ownership. I expect movement. 3. Ineos/Ratcliffe can't come out and blame the Glazers for the mess we are currently in. They signed a mutual non-disparagement clause when the deal was signed meaning neither party can criticise the other till they are in this together. It is a pretty standard procedure (nitter.cf/TelegraphDucker/status…) 4. Cost cutting is brutal, people losing jobs is terrible. But it is also nothing new. Most takeovers, especially failing businesses, have brutal cost cuts. Everything is trimmed down so cash could be directed to where it's most needed to get the club running again. In this case, getting maximum cash available for the summer transfer window. 5. As per the latest Athletic article, United's staff numbers following the latest round of redundancies will be around 696 which is comparable to rival clubs and pretty much the norm at major European clubs (nitter.cf/RedMarrow_/status/1889…) For the umpteenth time, I kindly ask you to remain calm. Given our financial situation, these measures were anticipated. There is a rationale behind the chaos.
[Long Post] One of the most daunting challenges of the Ineos era Man United is the seemingly never-ending discussion surrounding cost-cutting measures, which also encompass staff redundancies. It is a sensitive topic and I will try to be as delicate as I can be. Man Utd under the Glazers were a mess. The focus was on everything but football. The Glazers aimed to avoid any negative repercussions, while they received their dividends. So they happily agreed to whatever the then CEO Ed Woodward advised them to do. This involved accumulating a substantial workforce of 1,112 permanent employees at the club A lot of people aren't aware of the typical numbers employed at football clubs. So I have gathered the information of similar stature clubs (refer to the images attached on this tweet & the subsequent tweets in the thread). From their LinkedIn profiles: Real Madrid: Between 201-500 employees Barcelona: Between 201-500 employees In fact a report published a couple of years ago gave the exact number of employees at La Liga Clubs. According to this: Barcelona: 477 Real Madrid: 379 Atletico: 371 The German giants Bayern Munich employ 716 people by their own company information. French Champions PSG employ between 51 and 200 permanent staff. Moving to Italy: Juventus: Between 501-1000 employees Inter: Between 201-500 employees AC Milan: Between 501-1000 employees Now lastly the league we are most interested in: Premier League Liverpool: Between 501-1000 Arsenal: 723 Chelsea: 827 Tottenham: 793 Finally, the entire City Football Group with offices in Europe, North America , Asia, Australia had 1229 permanent staff in 2020. United were bloated. No major European club had more staff than Utd. It seems unreasonable for United to possess three times the workforce of Real Madrid, for example. Utd have, on average, employed 350 to 400 more people than their Premier League counterparts. Also it makes no sense for a football club to have just 117 employees less than a pan-continental multi club group. So the painful fact is Man United were grossly inflated and were slowly crumbling towards financial ruin. So staff redundancies were always on the cards. The 250 initial and the additional 100 redundancies will bring the total to around 773 which is comparable to other PL clubs. But the way Ineos have been going about it leave a lot to be desired. In a season where United are 13th with disastrous results one after the other, with ticket prices on the rise, with charities being underfunded, a further 100 redundancies make for terrible optics. They have also made numerous mistakes which have cost the club tens of millions of pounds. Mistakes which could have been avoided. The entire situation of extending Ten Hag's contract only to sack him 3 months later, for example. Hiring Amorim who plays a completely different system, mid-season is another example. All these could have been avoided. There should also be better communication from the club, and our situation should be explained better. We should not be hearing such delicate things from third party agencies. People losing jobs is never a nice thing to read. Some of these people have been at the club for decades. They gave their life, blood and tears to the club. Some have played crucial roles in player developments. Every staff member, regardless of their rank, has contributed to the trophies we have won over the years. Their contributions must not be overlooked. Their fears over the loss of their livelihoods must never be ignored. But I can also see where Ineos are coming from. Something had to give and unfortunately, just like everywhere, it's the lowest ranked members who have to face the wrath of change. I just have a few things to say for Ineos. They've done what was probably needed at the club. They have played the role of executioners. I just hope all the ashes of these executions will help the club to rise like a phoenix in the future and not just bury the club further.
