Building a Safer Future for Douglas County! 🚁 We are thrilled to officially break ground on the new Douglas County Helitack Hangar. This is a milestone for our community's wildfire response and aerial firefighting capabilities! This dedicated facility will house our year-round aerial firefighting support, ensuring our teams can respond faster, protect more homes and open spaces, and keep our residents safe from our region's top natural hazard. Reflecting on this critical step forward for public safety, Undersheriff Jason Kennedy said, "This hangar gives our first responders another important advantage as they work to protect Douglas County. It will keep our Helitack resources protected and ready to deploy, while creating a place where public safety partners can train together. When agencies train together, they perform together, and that makes our communities safer.” Thank you to our dedicated county commissioners, emergency management teams, our fire partner agencies, and everyone working behind the scenes to bring this project to life.

🚁 Today, we're celebrating the next chapter of Douglas County's Helitack program. This afternoon, county leaders and public safety partners will break ground on a new helicopter hangar, creating a permanent home for the aircraft and crew who help protect our community from wildfires. Douglas County is unique in having its own Helitack team. Since 2018, the team has flown 392 missions and responded to 142 fires, helping save homes, neighborhoods, and open space when seconds matter. Today's milestone is more than a building. It's an investment in the people, equipment, and preparedness that help keep Douglas County safe. This video captures part of the incredible crew behind the mission and the future we're building together. Here's to the next generation of wildfire response. 🔥🚁💙

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is proud to help keep Alex Mackiewicz’s legacy alive. Today, on what would have been his 16th birthday, Alex’s Legacy Compass and Victoria Cegielski donated laptops that will be presented to two deserving local students who embody the kindness and compassion Alex was known for. These students will be selected with the help of our School Resource Officers. Alex’s Mother, Victoria said, “After Alex’s passing, I received a heartfelt letter from his classmates that read, ‘he made everything around him a better place. He made a difference in so many kids' lives.’ SROs also leave an indelible mark on students' lives. That's why we've partnered with them to recognize and promote compassion and care, selecting students who embody kindness and make a difference one day, one action, one smile at a time.” The deserving students will receive their new laptops as they transition from elementary school to middle school. We are forever committed to always honoring Alex’s legacy. 💙

Cooking with a Cop🍅 🧑‍🍳 👮 Douglas County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Office Burriesci recently put on his apron, that of course has a badge on it, at Sedalia Elementary, joining students for a special "Cooking with a Cop" class! Thanks to the school’s incredible sustainability program, they had fresh tomatoes and basil right in their garden to make grilled caprese sandwiches. Together with the students, our deputies took orders from Deputy Burriesci, cleaning, chopping, marinating, and assembling some truly delicious results. Grazie to Sedalia Elementary for having us and for reminding us that community, cooking, and connection make the perfect recipe! 💙
