It takes a certain degree of disconnection, isolation and disregard for the people for ANYONE to somehow think it appropriate to say that Lagos Traffic - amounting to 7 waking hours on average per working Lagosian, spent on just COMMUTING to and from work - should be celebrated. Lagos Traffic actually kills Lagosians. A pastor of mine, a banker, a husband and father, died in Lagos Traffic. An elder brother of a namesake from Ibeju-Lekki, also died in traffic at Mile 2. I know of many Lagosians that have developed High Blood Pressure or worsened existing cardiac conditions because of Lagos Traffic Families are separated because of Lagos Traffic. An entire generation of young Lagosians have grown up either almost without enough input from their fathers, or with both parents largely absent from their lives, because of Lagos Traffic. Lagos businesses lose millions of man hours and billions of naira DAILY because of Lagos Traffic. I do not think that Lagosians that have been harassed, attacked or robbed in Lagos Traffic will agree that it is a "lifestyle" that should be "celebrated". @GRVlagos and I have always known this, and we have come up with a practical integrated, multi-modal transport plan that should cut the average Lagos daily commute time from the disgraceful 7 hours it currently is to around 2 hours. We will fix the major arterial roads first, mostly along the main bus routes, because we are bringing in a much larger number of buses than are currently in the service of LAMATA, but we cannot afford to damage them within a few weeks because of bad roads. We will also increase the number of motorable roads from the 1.3km/km² we currently have, to at least 5km/km² within 18 months. For reference, Singapore, 20% the size of Lagos, has 13.6km/km². We will build more jetties and introduce bigger catamaran platforms with roro facilities, so that vehicles as large as semi-trailer trucks and buses can be ferried at reasonable speeds across the relatively shallow Lagos waterways, alongside passaengers. Our lagoons, rivers and canals will certainly become busier. We will expand the railway provision to connect more parts of the state more quickly. We know that we need at least another 11 lines, and at least 300 more train stations, in addition to the buses and ferries. For reference, Singapore had 10 functional railway lines, and 148 railway stations. Only a man who has had the privilege of travelling in heavily guarded convoys for the 21 years he has lived off taxpayers' funds can see the soul-destroying Lagos gridlock as something to be celebrated. We do not see Lagos Traffic as something to be celebrated. We see it as a problem to be solved, and by God, and with your help, we will reduce it drastically. It's actually 7 hours. They're trying to mitigate the damage by massaging the data. The solutions are obvious, as @GRVlagos has said: 1. Heavier, more pragmatic use of the waterways. 2. Reconstruction of the major roads and bus routes. 3. Deployment of a minimum of 16,000 electric, high capacity brt buses on every major route with good roads. 4. Upgrade and massive Expansion of the railway network to accommodate cargo and petroleum products from the ports and the FTZ 5. Construction of high capacity container and petroleum terminals for the railways at every exit point of Lagos State, to minimise the number of heavy trailers coming into the ports and the refinery, thus reducing the amount of heavy traffic on the streets of Lagos. Some of this work can be completed in 18 months. The railways will take a little longer, but on the evidence available elsewhere in Africa, we're probably looking at a maximum of 5 years to have a world class railway network covering Lagos State. We should begin to see significant reductions in ACT (Average Commute Time) within the first 6 months, just due to road repairs and bus deployment.
