Gönüllüler, kedide zatürre, kedi enfeksiyöz peritoniti (FIP) ve kronik böbrek hastalığı bulunduğunu açıkladı. Tedavisinin ardından son haftalarını sıcak bir ev ortamında, gönüllülerin bakımında geçiren Hachiko'nun 5 Nisan'da hayatını kaybettiği duyuruldu. Yıllarca aynı mezarlığa dönmesiyle sosyal medyada tanınan Hachiko'nun hikâyesi, Japonya'da sahibini yıllarca beklemesiyle ünlenen Hachiko adlı köpeğe benzetilmişti.
