“I suddenly realized I was on the other side. What I saw was an unruly mob of self-indulgent middle-class hooligans. When I asked my friends what they wanted, what were they trying to achieve, all I got back was this ludicrous Marxist gobbledegook…”
Roger Scruton, Paris 1968
de man van één vrouw, wakker, matig, eerbaar, gaarne herbergende, bekwaam om te leren;
[3] Niet genegen tot de wijn, geen smijter, geen vuil-gewinzoeker; maar bescheiden, geen vechter, niet geldgierig.
[4] Die zijn eigen huis wèl regeert, zijn kinderen in onderdanigheid houdende, met alle stemmigheid;
[3] Want dat is goed en aangenaam voor God, onze Zaligmaker;
[4] Die wil, dat alle mensen zalig worden, en tot kennis der waarheid komen.
[5] Want er is één God, er is ook één Middelaar Gods en der mensen, de Mens Christus Jezus;
[6] Die Zichzelf gegeven heeft tot een losprijs voor allen, zijnde de getuigenis te zijner tijd
1 Timótheüs 1
Opwekking tot moedig strijden
[18] Dit gebod beveel ik u, mijn zoon, Timótheüs, dat gij naar de profetieën, die aangaande u voorafgegaan zijn, daarin de goede strijd strijdt;
[19] Houdende het geloof, en een goed geweten, hetwelk sommigen verstoten hebbende, aangaande het geloof schipbreuk geleden hebben;

This work is more important that it may at first seem. The nature of your surroundings is not trivial

“Our world is rent asunder by those same old cave-age emotions of greed, envy, lack of control, mutual hostility which have picked up in passing respectable pseudonyms like class struggle, racial conflict, struggle of the masses, trade-union disputes.”

To be optimistic in a pragmatic sense is to be eschatological. It’s working in the moment for the highest Good, not because it will necessarily change the course of history, but because it is a prefiguration of the Kingdom which is already latent and eerily manifest

“Profanity is the parlance of the fool. Why curse when there is such a magnificent language with which to discourse?"
-Theodore Roosevelt
I’ve thought about this a lot lately as I see more and more public figures using profanity to make a point. It seems like they’re trying to demonstrate passion or attract a younger audience. Whatever the case, I think it lessens the impact of what they’re trying to say. There is a time and a place for profanity and it isn’t in public or in professional conversation. It is indeed the “parlance of the fool.”

The corrupt accretion called capitalism is spoken of as something sacred that must not be “inconvenienced;” the sacred sanity of the family is treated as a troublesome accident that must not “inconvenience” it.

Friends, if you’re looking for a masterclass in evangelizing the culture, may I recommend Fulton Sheen’s “Life is Worth Living”?
Through his cunning and often self-deprecating humor, deep use of metaphors, and commitment to rational structure, Sheen brings the Church’s intellectual tradition to bear on contemporary society.
Every preacher and evangelist could learn from this.

As a matter of fact, nothing could be more contrary to common sense than this progressive notion of always preferring novelty to antiquity or action to repose.

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”
-F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Fitzgerald was born on this day in 1896.
Not many writers captured the glamour of the Jazz Age like he did. In my opinion,The Great Gatsby is still one of the best books in American literature.
With fall finally here, I can’t think of a more fitting line to remember him by.

Jane Austen writes about this
It is quite astounding the number of modern women who do not realise that one of the features of marriage is that you grow with the other person, you change along with them. No one is a perfect match to begin with, you grow and change together and through struggle and goodness of heart you become each others soulmate.
