My hope is that the next decade of tech questions won’t be technological—they’ll be ethical. We already know what we CAN do. Now we need to decide what we SHOULD do. Those are humanistic questions, about how to get tech to better reflect human values

My mom and dad tend to get lost in the plots of movies and shows. So I built this little site for them. I thought I’d share it with others so you can benefit as well waitimconfused.com

Did you know? Before Michel Foucault discovered power in 1976, humanity had no way to power electric lights, household appliances, or motorized vehicles. Most historians think that, without Foucault, we would still be riding horse-drawn carriages and reading by candlelight.

Yes, many critical-social-justice dogmas can't withstand intellectual scrutiny, so their proponents try to protect them via intimidation and walling off the university commons. Civil discourse and viewpoint diversity are threats to this tactic.
This new "report" is an embarrassing example of politicized argumentation plus scholarly ineptitude. It reflects that the movement to increase civil discourse & viewpoint diversity is rapidly advancing, which worries these authors. This is the best they could do to fight it.

If you’re planning to see the @a24 @nathanfielder documentary about Elizabeth - after the movie, imagine having thanksgiving dinner with her AFTER calling out her lies. For years I was living in the twilight zone. I hope this film gives you a 3 hour taste of what that was like

Today I take the highly controversial position that in fact 4 year universities are supposed to be about education, not football, sex, drinking, or hiring lots of administrators, and they've lost the plot. dilanesper.substack.com/p/co…

The only way to combat the AI cheating crisis is with intensive instruction. This requires smaller class sizes and profs who aren’t teaching 5 courses a semester at 4 different colleges like many adjuncts. Cut the make-work admins, do a TT-hiring blitz. Anything else is madness.

Imagine for 1 second that you have it wrong and Jews are telling the truth. That the genocide libel is bs. That Hamas are terrorists. That you are being manipulated to desire the removal of Jews from society. Do you understand if we’re right, that makes you the millions of European and African and Asian friends and neighbors who wiped millions of us off 3 continents just a few decades ago? What’s more likely - that we, the tiny minority who have been libeled and blamed and persecuted by every society in which we’ve ever lived for centuries, are the bad guys? Or that you, the non-Jewish masses who have hounded and defamed and slaughtered us all over the world over and over and over again, have once again been suckered in by propaganda you unquestioningly latch onto because it gives you a scapegoat to blame for your own problems and sins? “History repeats itself… except this time! I’m different!” Is essentially what every Jew hater tells themselves. No. You are no different than the Iraqi or Soviet or German or Algerian who turned on their Jewish neighbors the second they got the societal green light. Never in the history of the world has the group persecuting Jews been “on the right side of history.” Not once. Courage isn’t going with the crowd to hate on us some more. That’s easy. Courage is looking in the mirror, in a history book, at what is happening to Jews in our society, and saying stop this train, I’m getting off.

My favorite AI joke: Current models are getting close to PhD-level intelligence. After that, they're expected to achieve the intelligence of someone who decided not to do a PhD.

Higher ed has been contracting for a decade. Depending on how you count, around 100 or more four-year institutions have closed in that time. The closures and mergers are likely to accelerate in the next ten years. A range of 2-300 more seems very possible. hechingerreport.org/more-tha…
Heard about a small college in the Midwest that has lost 50% of its enrollment in the last 10 years. Hundreds of colleges are going to close in the next decade and it’s going to be devastating for many communities.

People are under-pricing the possibility of a black-swan-esque event where significant chunks of higher ed collapse suddenly. At some point parents will decide they will not pay $100-400k combined for their kids to cheat their way through college. I expect a bang, not a whimper.

This beautiful bridge mural in Indio, California, is something truly special. Watch how amazing the optical illusion is. It’s created by artist Harvey Garcia and it’s over 600 feet long.
