I think it's super cool how in an era where the US government is systematically destroying every species and ecosystem possible, SeaWorld has stopped pretending to give a shit about educating guests about the natural world or imparting conservation messages to them.

I unfortunately don't have any photos of wild Venomous Snakes, so here's a few photos of a few fantastic fellas at Australia Zoo that have the potential to thoroughly ruin your day. 1. Eastern Brown Snake 2. Coastal Taipan 3. Tiger Snake 4. Inland Taipan

This is why I drill the idea that "if you cannot ID exactly what species of snake is in front of you with 150% certainty, assume it can kill you in 5 minutes" into the heads of literally everyone I interact with regularly irl. Making this mistake has put people in coffins.
Had a snake show up in the shed today. Because the floors polished concrete, it couldn't go anywhere and understanably was very stressed Me being me, picked em up and moved em to the garden where it quickly slithered off Found after the fact it was a baby eastern brown Woops

It's not that much of an exaggeration either. No matter where you are in Australia it's almost guaranteed there's at least one dangerously venomous - if not deadly venomous - snake that's common there. Here's the most observed snakes in my area (Brisbane) via iNat as an example;

I don't know why, but something about seeing photos of Icelandic Orcas early into their captivity is more painful than seeing similar photos of Residents and Transients.

We've had LOTS of rain recently, which means the birds haven't really been visiting the Grevillea, so here's some photos from a week or so ago of a Cockatoo trying to have a snack on a gusty morning.

Just had a random cat literally wander into our house through the cracked garage door. Pretty sure it darted back out, but we've closed the garage door and left the interior door open. If it is still in there we'll catch it up in the morning to take to the RSPCA.

I'm 99% sure it was this cat. It hangs out on our street regularly, and from what I've seen is pretty skittish, which fits with it bolting when it realised we were there. It marks the THIRD seperate cat that's shown up at our door in the year and a half we've lived here.

I was planning to head out today for Bird Count but uhm. Maybe not.

Cockatoo from my window today. We see these guys almost every day this time of year, as they come by to feed on the fruit from the neighbour's Grevillea.

I haven't been following captive orca stuff for a bit, but what's going on with SWO's new Orca Show? Because I swear it was supposed to debut months ago now, but I've heard NOTHING about it since that clip of them testing the music and pre-show video like half a year ago.

Resharing this because I am probably 48 hours away from committing to cobbling together my own rudimentary ID catalogue, and I'd REALLY like to avoid sinking hours and hours and hours into that if there's a proper catalogue already available somewhere.
Hey Ceta People. Does anyone have any old Catalogues from the 1970's and/or 1980's for SRKWs, NRKWs and Biggs? I'm digging up a lot of photos of whales from that era and I'd love to be able to identify them. Photo Tax with some SRKWs in July 1966 via Arizona Republic.

When I get called downstairs to "come see this" I know it usually means there's a cool animal. But let me tell you maybe the last thing I expected was a fully grown Titan Stick Insect just hanging out on my mum's bike!!! Holy Fucking Shit!!!!!!

Also obligatory disclaimer because ethical wildlife interaction is important: I only picked him up because he was on a bike that needed to be used, and he was only in my hand for about 30 seconds, maybe 45 seconds max.

Cetatok remains undefeated for braindead takes because I just saw someone say that Lynn isn't alone because she's kept with Dolphins and they're perfectly suitable companions because she has a good relationship with them馃

Another accidental find that's a lot less concerning and much more cool is this 1994 article about Saola, including a photo of a juvenile that I haven't been able to find in any of my quick google searches.
