Sussex Police officers PC Stephen Smith and PC Rachel Comotto have been sacked after pepper-spraying and Tasering 92-year-old Donald Burgess, a single-leg amputee living with dementia, at his care home. Smith sprayed almost an entire can pepper spray directly into Burgess’s face and struck him with a baton before Comotto tasered him, all within 83 seconds of entering his room. Investigators found Burgess posed no immediate threat to himself or anyone else, and the officers made no attempt to de-escalate the situation. Burgess was taken to hospital afterwards, where he contracted Covid-19 and died 22 days later but the IOPC said that the officers’ actions did not cause or contribute to his death.

What's happening in France is that students are protesting against overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating school buildings, and long school days, from 8am to 6pm. Teachers, unions and parents have also joined the protests in solidarity.
