Andrew Platkin was the smartest and kindest person Iβve ever met
he was our CTO / cofounder and he tragically passed away 6 months after we launched @beehiiv
its been 2 years since we lost him.. so I wrote something to reflect and share his story

are substack's network effects dying?
emily sundberg is in the top 0.1% of substack writers:
> joined early in 2020
> gets exclusive access to features
> has thousands of recommendations
she shared her growth chart earlier this week and it looks ~flat since march??
we asked our users how we could most improve @beehiiv and heard them loud and clear
the next 6 weeks: relentlessly shipping as many high impact features and clearing the backlog
> core email features
> editor improvements
> reimagined website builder
> tons of QoL improvements
#28 publication-scoped API keys
for agencies + teams running multiple publications: API keys can now be scoped to specific pubs
give access to exactly what's needed, nothing more
#29 login code in the subject line
when readers log in to your website, their OTP code is now in the email subject line
small QoL update, better reader experience :)

the most important skill as a founder is storytelling. the second most important is being delusional enough to believe your own stories
just to get @beehiiv off the ground I had to convince:
> our cofounder & CTO that his well-paying startup job was a worse option than joining three guys with no product, no users and no revenue
> our first 5 engineers to leave $200k jobs to take a risk on a company making less than their salary
> investors to put $2.6m into a prototype (after more than 40 of them had already said no)
even at $35m ARR and 130+ employees, I have to make sure every person knows how their work impacts our goals and mission
being a founder requires a delusional sense of optimism. I was telling the team this would be a multi-billion dollar company when we were barely making $10k a month
I genuinely believed it then & I believe it even more now

you need a very healthy amount of fuck around and find out in your life otherwise you're gonna live so safe that you might as well have not lived at all
#27 small editor touches
a few things you asked for:
> style sidebar remembers how you left it
> rich text in embed link titles
> button width control on website signup blocks
> post.rank merge tag for numbered post lists on your site

#26 faster search
we made some big backend improvements to increase the performance across the app
some of the many places that shows up:
> subscriber search
> post search

#25 A/B test while you warm up a new domain
new sending domain? no more waiting to A/B test
subject line tests now work while your domain warms up, so you can optimize from your very first send

one of the bizarre realities of building a remote company: I've talked to my cofounders nearly every day for the past five years, but we've only hung out in person a handful of times
the picture on the left was us building @beehiiv as a side project on nights and weekends back in new york. ben and jake were still at morning brew, and I was working at youtube
no users, no revenue, no idea what the hell we were doing
a few months after ben took that selfie: I left for LA, ben for south carolina, and jake for texas. in the years since, we've only hung out once or twice a year at our annual company offsite
two months ago I shot them a "yo, we should chill this year"
the picture on the right is from last week.
we spent the week together in mexico city in our own little hacker house (i.e. airbnb) and grinded together like the early days
I am the biggest proponent of remote work, I wouldn't trade it for the world
but it was so damn awesome to be back in the trenches building together... and eating amazing tacos.
p.s. looks like jake only owns one shirt and knows one pose. some things never change
10M+ MCP calls on @beehiiv
1M+ in the last week alone
we are building the modern AI-native infra to run a creator business... and we're just getting started.
more coming soon π
