Perry Mehrling understood money and banking like no one else.
He liked to write short books, not long ones. "People don't finish reading long books," he would say. He wanted readers to finish his books.
Perry wasn't done. Let's keep it going.

Instead of the Fed lowering interest rates today, we could have had a Universal Basic Income.

An efficient and productive economy always needs both UBI to fuel consumption, and wages to motivate labor.
As labor-saving technology improves, the necessary balance between UBI and wages shifts in UBI's favor.
Striking the right balance of UBI & wages doesn't cause inflation.

Labor-saving technology will advance faster if we expect to use it. Universal Basic Income helps us get the most out of labor-saving technology.

UBI is a cash delivery method or system; it is often paired with novel taxes as part of a package deal, but the tax end is its own separate discussion.

If you've ever wondered what this whole #BasicIncome (UBI) thing is about, I just posted a revised version of my working paper, "The Natural Rate of Basic Income," which I presented at two conferences (BIEN and FRIBIS) in 2021.

Replying to @ImaHavinagredei @derekvg
There are important problems that #BasicIncome doesn't solve. It "merely" solves the problem of how to get people their money.

I like to emphasize that #BasicIncome is a mechanism for getting people money (i.e. even distribution to everyone paid out regularly) rather than a particular amount.
We can then ask what the optimal level of #UBI is given no other changes in fiscal policy. Is it zero?

Once you've decided that you want to distribute money to consumers, #BasicIncome is an efficient way to do it. #UBI is a way of getting people money, not a particular amount.

3/6 If the fiscal authority changes what they're doing with respect to taxing and spending, then that automatically changes the natural level of UBI for the economy. It is the responsibility of UBI calibration to make the appropriate adjustment.

1/6 If we take the non-UBI fiscal policy position as given and we want a monetary policy position that's compatible with a stable financial sector, then there's only one level of UBI that's even possible.
There are no discretionary decisions made in changing the level of UBI.

Question for @AndrewYang:
Has the "Boston Basic Income" channel, run by @AlexHowlettUBI escaped your notice?
The channel is up to 140+ episodes, and looks at UBI from pretty much every angle. It's awesome.
Yang Gangers should know about it.
