61: Josh Miller - A Good Rectangle
Dialectic 61: Josh Miller! @joshm has always been thoughtful about the spaces we spend time in. The browser is "really a rectangle that we spend eight hours a day in." So "why would we not want to live in a good rectangle?" Josh sat down with me to reflect on @browsercompany's journey about a year after it was acquired by @Atlassian. We talked about everything from the original decision to "optimize for feelings" to hiring unlikely stars to where Dia and the browser stand in the AI era. Above all else, Josh believes in people. I’ve felt that, as have so many others who’ve collaborated with him or simply been around him. I hope you’re inspired to believe in people too, and to leave your fingerprints on the things you make. Timestamps: (0:00) - Opening Highlights (1:19) - Intro: Josh Miller (3:14) - Start: Not Commercial Enough & Optimizing for Feelings (10:33) - Sociology, the Obama White House, Thrive, and the 5% Favicon (16:57) - Bowling Alone, James Turrell, and Roden Crater (23:31) - Betting on People, Leaving Thrive, and Where Computing Goes (36:13) - "Assume You Don't Know" and What Was Sacred at The Browser Company (43:17) - Intuition, Road Trips, and Leaving Fingerprints on Things (55:16) - Building in Public, Pulling Back, and the Road to Atlassian (1:04:42) - The Internet Computer in the AI Era: Codex, Cloud Browsers, and Why Everything Is Converging (1:14:49) - How Dia Wins (1:18:26) - Agents, Muse, and the Red Giraffe (1:24:02) - Software Is Becoming Art (1:33:32) - Believing in People, Leaving Facebook for the White House, and What's Next (1:48:36) - Closing Questions @dialecticpod 61: Josh Miller - A Good Rectangle - is out now, below and on all platforms.

Most sales advice is about what to say. @jgebbia’s best move, while selling CritBuns, was asking one question: "How do you see this product fitting into your life?" Then he’d shut up and listen. "This would be great on the bleachers for my kid's soccer game." "I go camping all the time; I’d love to take this with me." "This would be great for my pregnant wife." "My uncle has sciatica; this would take pressure off the tailbone." Joe quickly realized that people were selling his product to themselves. "They convinced themselves why they needed this cushion." Watch Joe break down his five-step sales process.

16 Lessons from @arcinstitute's Patrick Hsu (@pdhsu) on Outworking the Smart Kids, Balancing Humility & Arrogance, and Pushing the Frontier of Biotech: 1. “Genius” disguises hard work. 2. At the frontier, nobody outranks you. 3. Most of the map is still blank. 4. Research is 99% failure, including your best ideas. 5. Doubt every idea. Never doubt yourself. 6. Having fun is how you last. 7. Taste is an appreciating asset in science. 8. Simplify until you see the path forward. 9. When the product feels magical, the money follows. 10. Possibility is contagious. 11. Every company has genetics. 12. Don’t underestimate the gym bros. 13. Obsolescence is the default. 14. Don’t peer-review your relationships. 15. A fast life needs good brakes. 16. Pick a game you can’t finish.

If you don’t know what to do with your life, you’re not alone. For most of recorded history, the answer was “farm,” meaning the question of "what should I do?" is an incredibly modern one. That’s why @a_m_mastroianni wants to write a book that answers it: “A lot of what exists is like, 'Here’s how to have a creative career. Here’s some general life advice. Here’s some inspiration.' But the question on everyone’s mind is, what do I do? Where do I go?” “We just don’t have that much depth to draw from, so the bar is really low for doing better.”

This conversation shows why working with Josh is so lovely. He enables people to be their best selves, pursue big ideas, and be unafraid to think of product as art.

Replying to @joshm
@joshm has inspired so much of my thinking on how we can make technology products into friendlier / more personal spaces... Lots of early branch / potluck (and browser co!) spirit in Tolan today :)

Still on the fence about @ndstudio? Here’s @jgebbia’s pitch: - An install base of 340 million users on day one. - A fix you ship this week shows up on your mom’s phone. - Your parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends are among the people you’re building for.
