If you like BLACK MIRROR, watch INSIDE NO. 9 (2014).
Both are British anthology shows built around completely different stories every episode, but INSIDE NO. 9 goes in some seriously unexpected directions. Horror, comedy, tragedy, mystery, absurdity, sometimes all within the same half hour.
The genius is that the only real rule is the number 9. A house, a hotel room, a train compartment, a dressing room, whatever the story needs. From there, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith can basically do anything they want.
And some episodes are genuinely unbelievable. The kind where you finish and immediately want to go back and watch it again just to see what you missed.
BLACK MIRROR is great at making you think about where technology could take us. INSIDE NO. 9 is more interested in showing just how strange, cruel and hilarious people can be.
Nine seasons. 55 episodes. Every story is its own little movie.
If you haven’t watched it yet, this is a seriously easy recommendation.
I watched it to the point that I left the installation service for one of our pastors early so I could see an episode in real time (back half of S6, when they were all bangers)
The Bible says "Thou shalt not kill," yet there are many stories where God commands people to kill entire cities. How do you explain that?
Not to sound too critical, I found the ending to be very moving. PEOPLE... not a person... PEOPLE were SOBBING... not crying... SOBBING. When Heart of the Beast ended, I got up to leave, everyone stayed seated, appearing completely enthralled with the film. So maybe I'm just a heartless son of a bitch, and this is going to be a smashing hit. Now... I'm from the rural South, and this sort of movie plays really well here. Also, as far as the visuals go, the locations are stunning. The cinematography in general was impressive, too. Some of the CGI, though... oh wait, this is supposed to be the positive portion of the review. Sorry!
It's fitting J.K. Simmons is in this, because to borrow a line from Terence Fletcher in WHIPLASH, "Not quite my tempo."
If you need to spend some time with your dad this weekend, give him a call. He'll probably love it! Heart of the Beast is a very simple, straightforward story that I found dragging, despite its brief 101-minute runtime. And I like David Ayer, and I love Brad Pitt. I'm even a dog guy, but this was a bit of a bore. It's a mediocre survivalist tale. I don't regret seeing it in theaters, but I'm probably one and done. I will pass on the physical release. I'm slightly disappointed!
