A senior Indigenous elder from the West Australian region at the heart of a major child-protection scandal has issued a national call for abused children to be taken away from “bad parents” who should be charged with neglect, declaring that the current crisis is not another Stolen Generation.
Nyamal-Pitjikarli woman Doris Eaton – speaking after revelations in The Australian of abandoned young children living without adults at a derelict house in Frisby Court, South Hedland – said Aboriginal people had to start “getting tough” on irresponsible parents or a generation of children would be lost.
“If parents aren’t parenting, if parents are neglecting and abandoning and being violent in front of their kids and drinking and abusing drugs and being bad parents, then they should have their kids removed and the government needs to think up another name for what they’re going to call this,” the 76-year-old said
