Canada didn’t copy Labour Day from the US.
The Americans actually took the idea from Toronto.
In 1872, Toronto printers went on strike for a 9-hour workday. The publisher of The Globe had the union leaders arrested using an ancient 1792 law.
Prime Minister John A. Macdonald hated the publisher, so he passed the Trade Unions Act to legalize unions just to humiliate his rival.
• 10,000 people marched through Toronto in solidarity
• An American labour leader saw the parade model and imported it to New York in 1882
• Both countries made it an official holiday in 1894
The long weekend we get off today was born out of a 150-year-old feud in Toronto.
