New Preprint! How can cells polarize in the absence of a stimulus? We suggest a surprising biophysical mechanism, protein caging!
We reveal how the complex mechanical interactions at the cell surface lead to symmetry breaking.
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
We show that forcing the formation of caged domains in cells can give rise to symmetry breaking, generating structures mimicking the trailing-edge of migrating cells. Our results highlight the immense regulatory potential inherent to the unique biophysics of the cell surface.
Thanks to all the co-authors involved in the making of this work including the @mleptin , @SaricLab , Ejsing lab, @murrell_lab and Belmonte lab!

Some of us were asked by @CellCellPress about the future of mechanobiology. In all likelihood, 20 years from now we'll see we were all wrong. Any thoughts? What did we miss?🤔🔮👇authors.elsevier.com/a/1j8Ml…

Over the moon about receiving an #ERCCoG this year! Thank you @ERC_Research and the selection pannel for the funding to dive into cell division with MitoMeChAnics.
Big shout-out to all the friends and colleagues who provided key feedback on the proposal and interview stages!
Congratulations, Alba Diz-Muñoz and Arnaud Krebs!
The two EMBL researchers have received prestigious ERC Consolidator Grants to pursue projects – MitoMeChAnics and TFCoop – that aim to understand the precise regulation of crucial cellular processes.
